Happy Surgical Tech week!! We sadly said goodbye to Holly, one of most wonderful surgical techs and human beings that we have worked with. She is retiring after an amazing career at Hartford Hospital, and we wish her the best. I promised to continue to text her if I need last minute case/implants changes so she doesn’t feel left out!

A true story of resilience written by Dick Sederquist. Veteran of multiple spinal fusion surgeries by me, and truthfully some of which did not go in his favor, but he persevered and never gave up. With his condition at a crossroad, he entrusted me one last time, and thankfully now he is back on the trail hiking with his family.

While working at a Level 1 trauma hospital can be stressful and overwhelming, one must take pride in the teamwork and be proud of the accomplishments at the end of the day. Chief resident Annabelle Davey working with junior resident Alex Hahn finishing up a complex case, along with our amazing surgical tech Julie. One hopes when they become attending surgeons in the future, they can reflect back and fondly remember these small but joyful moments.

UConn Resident Highlight: Michael Megafu, who hails from Nigeria, otherwise known as the “Giant of Africa”. Fittingly, he has been a man of large stature ever since young and that propelled him into a dominant basketball player at St Joseph’s College. He once scored 31 points in a game, a phenomenal feat that has forever been etched into school history. When asked who is his favorite basketball player, interestingly he says “Yao Ming”. He is also a Jazz aficionado and he is the biggest John Coltrane fan in the 06032 area code. He is only at the beginning of his long career and we are sure he will be a successful surgeon under the tutelage of his professors and Annabelle Davey, who is his mentor.

Truly the end of an era. Andrew, our Mazor robotic rep is leaving us to go back home to Michigan with his family. Through the years, through the ups and downs, he has been a true professional at his job and he will be sorely missed. We wish he and his family the best! Go Michigan State!

The type of car one drives can be seen as a symbol of success and status. Finally, after weeks of shaming by Dr. Stuart, my accomplishments have finally been recognized by Chief Resident Cory Hewitt, “man, sweet ride, I need one of those”. What a proud moment that was!
