Sensory Processing Part 3!

🌟 Every child processes the world around them in their own unique way!

This chart explains how kids respond to sensory input (sights, sounds, textures, movements, and smells around them).

🔸 Under-responsive – May not notice sensations.
👉🏻Example: Doesn’t realize their hands are sticky or doesn’t respond when their name is called.

🔸 Appropriate sensory processing – Response fits the situation.
👉🏼Example: Covers ears when it’s loud, enjoys playground play without getting overwhelmed.

🔸 Sensory over-reactive – May feel overwhelmed by certain sensations.
👉🏽Example: Gets upset by scratchy clothing, avoids loud places, or is sensitive to bright lights.

🔸 Sensory seeker – Craves more input and actively looks for it.
👉🏾Example: Loves to jump, spin, make loud sounds, or touch everything.

💖 Remember: None of these responses are “wrong.” They simply show how a child’s nervous system takes in the world. Understanding their sensory needs helps us support them with compassion, patience, and creativity.

“Challenging behaviors” are often just unmet needs in disguise 🧠✨

Instead of asking how to stop it, let’s ask what it’s telling us.

When a child refuses, melts down, or runs off—it’s not about defiance. It’s communication. It’s regulation. It’s survival. 💬💛

We believe in seeing beyond the behavior to support the whole child. To support connection. To foster regulation. To build trust. To eliminate inequity.

“Is my child behind if they don’t know their colors yet?” 🫣

We get it. OF COURSE, you want your child to grow in all the beautiful ways! However, when it comes to early language development, we want to focus on functional words- the ones that help children get their needs met, connect with others, and navigate their world.

Before colors, numbers, and animal names, we’re looking for words like:
➡️ More
➡️ Go
➡️ Help
➡️ Stop
➡️ Eat
➡️ All done
➡️ Open

These words serve a purpose- and purposeful language is what builds strong communication skills 💬

“But, will a diagnosis put my child in a box?” 🏷️🧩

It’s a question we get all the time and our response is always layered, as there is no “right” path that works for everyone. The path that provides access to affirming support, deepens understanding of self, and fosters acceptance looks different for every child and family. It’s often a process that requires introspection, healing, and critical thought and we’re here for you every step of the way. 🌱

“Why does my child melt down after watching Cocomelon?” is a question we get ALL the time! So, here’s what the research shows ⬇️

Research on fast-paced kids’ shows (think scene changes every 2 seconds 😳) finds real, statistically significant hits to kids’ focus and self-regulation—even after just 9 minutes 📊

Cocomelon checks every fast-paced box, which is why some little ones seem wired and whiny when the screen switches off 🤯

The fix isn’t to panic or shame—it’s to mix in slower shows, co-view, and give brains time to reset. Check the slides for the science & simple swaps! 🌱🧠

17 million disabled individuals in this country rely on Medicaid for life saving care. To cut Medicaid would mean taking many, many lives. It would mean taking away the ability to speak, eat, breathe, and move for many people because things like wheelchairs, AAC devices, respiratory support, and feeding supplies would no longer be covered. It would mean taking away essential therapeutic support like speech, occupational, and physical therapy. It would mean taking away home- and community-based services, reverting us back to institutionalizing disabled individuals (which would cost more money and add to the debt, by the way). It would mean taking away health insurance for disabled adults that can no longer work. It would exponentially multiply the already existent health inequities occurring in our country.

This isn’t politics: it’s humanity.
