Over time I am learning that we are a society too quick to find and point out the faults in our children or youth in general. Well, to be frank..in anyone. One of the chief complaints from my clients is: “I’m worried ‘they’ are just going to tell me I’m doing it wrong.” “I’m tired of feeling like I’m never good enough.” “I feel so useless sometimes.”
I myself am guilty of this as a parent, friend, and wife! “Don’t do that.” “Why haven’t you done this yet?” “I wonder if you could have tried harder.” “Focus!!!!!!” This type of criticism has its place in life but so does empowerment. When someone reinforces that I’ve done something well, correct, or kind...you bet I am feeling a different kind of person than when someone tells me..I’m not.
Try something out this week..replace a criticizing statement with an empowerment phrase. Or, simply add more empowerment intentions to your conversations. Watch the shift in your child, peer, or partner over time.
