Love this tip by Mrs. Speechie P! This is a great low-pressure way to elicit and model language for your child.

My sneaky trick to asking questions- without actually asking, and with no pressure! The trick is to just “wonder” aloud - and if the child doesn’t add info at first, keep speaking your thoughts. “I wonder how trains travel from one place to the other.... I know it’s not on a road..... oh! I think I know... on tracks!” No pressure, no obligation to speak- but LOTS of opportunities to communicate with the wait time and expectant facial expression- plus they are receptively gaining information!

Due to current recommendations for social distancing, we are now offering teletherapy! That means you can participate in speech and language therapy via videoconference. All you need is a decent internet connection and a computer with a we**am and microphone, although a tablet or smartphone can work if a computer isn’t an option. No software download involved, you’ll just get a link to follow and you’ll join the session right from your browser. Please contact us with any questions!

These are some good tips for encouraging speech at home! I would add to “don’t say ‘say’” that I like to use “you could say” as a more natural, less demanding way to give your child one possible way they could express themselves. For example, the child points to his or her cup and makes a sound that is not an intelligible word, you respond “oh you could say ‘drink!’” This is easy to combine with the strategy of adding 1-2 words to what the child says. So if the child says “drink” you respond “you could say ‘I want a drink!’” And then wait, and give the child the opportunity to attempt what you modeled!

It’s important to note that we will allll end up doing some of the don’ts sometimes- and that’s ok- but we definitely need to be aware and try to decrease those while increasing the positive communication supports! Yes! In addition, as parents we often wanting our children to have politeness markers like “please” and “thank you” and abstract words like “more” in their early vocabularies but teaching them more concrete, useful words first like “drink” “bite” “up” etc to request things that they want will have clearer benefit to the child (they can get something they want if they ask for it) and therefore they make the connection that spoken language is useful for them! “More,” “please,” “thank you,” and colors and shapes can come later!

When you have a child with limited language abilities, it’s important to focus on and teach FUNCTIONAL language - not academic language like letters, numbers, colors, or shapes! Here’s why! Do you agree? 👇🏼👇🏼
