Exciting News: Meet Our Counseling Interns!

We’re thrilled to announce that three counseling interns will be joining our team this fall as part of their graduate training in clinical mental health counseling. These interns are advanced students who are completing their master’s degrees and gaining valuable field experience under the direct supervision of a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Why work with a counseling intern?

There are several unique benefits to working with a counseling intern, including:

🔹 Affordable Services: Interns are able to offer counseling at a significantly reduced cost, making therapy more accessible for individuals and families.

🔹 Fresh Perspectives: Interns bring the latest evidence-based practices from their academic programs, along with a strong passion for helping others.

🔹 Supervised Care: All intern sessions are supervised by an experienced, licensed clinician to ensure high-quality care, ethical practice, and support for client progress.

🔹 Supportive Environment: Interns are committed to learning and growth, which often translates to a collaborative, empathetic, and open therapeutic relationship.

Whether you’re seeking support for anxiety, relationship issues, life transitions, or simply looking for someone to talk to, working with one of our interns might be the perfect fit.

If you’re interested in scheduling a session or learning more, feel free to reach out. We’re honored to be part of these future counselors’ training journeys—and to extend affordable, meaningful support to our community in the process.

Flora Miller is a graduate practicum student currently completing her clinical training as part of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling master’s program at Adams State University. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Sciences from Oregon State University.

Rooted in a holistic and trauma-informed philosophy, Flora views healing as a process that honors the interconnectedness of a person's emotional, physical, relational, and spiritual experiences. Her clinical work is shaped by experience supporting foster and adoptive families, as well as caregivers involved in family preservation and reunification efforts through the child welfare system. She believes that change is possible when people are met with presence, compassion, and respect for their lived experience.

Flora is currently expanding her clinical foundation through training in mindfulness-based approaches, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Narrative Therapy (NT). Her areas of focus include anxiety, exploring identity, navigating life transitions, understanding family dynamics, and healing from relational and spiritual trauma. She is especially drawn to working with children and adults who are reconnecting with their sense of voice and personal agency after adversity.

Outside of her clinical work, Flora enjoys immersing herself in fiction, creating detailed cross-stitch tapestries, unwinding with video games, and sharing everyday moments with her blended family and their beloved pets—Link the dog, and two cats, Jinx and Zeus.

May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States and several other countries. It’s a time dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues, reducing stigma, and promoting mental well-being.

Origins:
• Founded in 1949 by Mental Health America (MHA).
• The goal was (and still is) to educate the public about mental illnesses and mental health, and to promote strategies for achieving mental wellness.

Goals of the Month:
1. Raise awareness of mental health conditions.
2. Combat stigma around mental illness.
3. Promote access to mental health services and resources.
4. Encourage open conversations about mental health.
5. Highlight preventive strategies and early interventions.

Why it Matters:
• 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year.
• Mental health is crucial for overall well-being and impacts relationships, work, and physical health.
• Early support and education can help prevent crises and improve outcomes.

Today was another bittersweet day, as we said farewell to our team member Janell. Janell was our very first intern at Zia Healing and Wellness, and throughout her counseling journey here, she set a high bar for all future interns and clinicians alike.

During her time with us, Janell achieved impressive accomplishments that showcased her dedication to becoming an incredible mental health clinician. While at Zia, Janell:

*Successfully completed her practicum and internship✅✅
*Earned her Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling✅
*Became a Licensed Addictions Counselor (LAC) ✅
*Completed Basic Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) Training ✅

Janell managed to accomplish all of this while also delivering compassionate and exceptional therapy to her clients and while working to complete hours towards her independent license as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).

Although we will greatly miss Janell, we know that Florida will be very fortunate to gain her as a clinician. Best of luck to her and her spouse on their future endeavors!
