TIYATE GLIPI ANPETU
They Are Back to the Homelands Day
On this day, we remember and honor the nine children who were brought home to the Sicangu Lakota Oyate from Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania four years ago. They were taken from their families over 140 years ago and made a journey of over 1,400 miles home. There are still children who have not returned home from Carlisle or the other 400+ U.S. Indian Boarding Schools.
Today we remember Lucy Take the Tail (Pretty Eagle); Rose Long Face (Little Hawk); Ernest Knocks Off (White Thunder); Dennis Strikes First (Blue Tomahawk); Maud Little Girl (Swift Bear); Friend Hollow Horn Bear; Warren Painter (Bear Paints Dirt); Alvan (Kills Seven Horses); Dora Her Pipe (Brave Bull).
They are home.
