Helping people just feels good, but did you know that when we help others we can also help ourselves?

A study by author Emily Ansell of the Yale University School of Medicine explains that a greater number of helping behaviors are associated with higher levels of daily positive emotion and better overall mental health.

In the same study people who reported lower-than-usual helping behavior reported lower positive emotion and higher negative emotion in response to high daily stress.

In other words, helping behavior seemed to buffer the negative effects of stress on well-being.

Next time you're feeling overwhelmed with all thats going on, try lending a helping hand.

Helping somebody could refocus your attention, and prevent rumination while lowering feelings of stress.

Psychiatrist Aaron Katcher of the University of Pennsylvania and Psychologist Alan Beck of Purdue University conducted controlled experiments measuring what happens to our bodies when we pet a friendly dog.

Here’s what they found:

Blood pressure went down
Heart rate slowed
Breathing became more regular &
Muscle tension relaxed
