Play is learning!! There are different types or stages of play and they are all important to a child’s development. working in early intervention I spend a lot of time educating parents on the importance of play. When we can get children to play with us we have the opportunity to work on some many speech and language skills.

Social interactions are the foundation of communication skills. As an SLP working in early intervention this is a topic I discuss with families all the time. Many children I work with who have expressive and receptive language delays have very limited desires for social interactions. They usually only seek interactions from others to get are personal needs met. Without meaningful social interactions on a diet basis children miss out on the development of many skills, including communication development.

Excited to find these during my store run this morning! I love using Pop-up Peekaboo books with my early intervention kids. They love them. Even the hardest to engage kids are lured in by the cause and effect of the pop ups when opening a page. They are great to work on vocabulary, joint attention, requesting, identifying, turn taking, and so much more!

Language is a shared system of words used by a group of people to communicate. The words also known as vocabulary of a language convey a particular meaning. Vocabulary knowledge is a foundational tool for communication. Did you know that children need to understand words before they say them. By the time children are 2 years old they should have about a 200 word vocabulary. Their vocabularies continue to grow rapidly each year as they get older. Children with rich vocabularies are better able to comprehend what they hear and read, as well as use words to express themselves. Reading to children, having conversations with them, and talking to them about things in their environment daily can help build vocabulary.

April is Autism Awareness Month. The Autism Speaks organization has launched a Kindness Quest for the month to help create and promote a more kinder and accepting world for people living with Autism. Each week they deliver a different kindness quest. This week 4/20-4/26 the kindness quest is to Advocate and Volunteer for the Autism Community. I've had the privilege of working in various educational settings with students of all ages with autism. My role as a speech language pathologist is to help build communication skills. To help some find their voice. To help all express themselves in a way that is understood by others. To help all understand what others say and mean. I learned so much over the years. Getting to know the students has been the best part. Every student is different. They all have their own challenges, but they also have their own unique strengths. One thing they all have in common is the want and need to be accepted, included, and supported by others. We can all play a part by learning about autism and working to accept, include, and support those living with autism.

For Autism Awareness Month — join us for a new special Autism Navigator Webinar to learn how to use the SORF (Systematic Observation of Red Flags) to identify early signs of autism during a virtual home observation as we face COVID-19 restrictions.

Going Virtual with the SORF using a Home Observation to Improve Early Detection of Autism

Autism Navigator is collaborating with ECHO Autism and Autism Science Foundation to bring this special webinar to you. This webinar will help you get started planning and conducting virtual observations with families of young children 12 to 36 months of age.

Since face-to-face diagnostic evaluations may not be possible at this time, a virtual observation can provide families with a way to keep evaluation and referral going so families can access appropriate early intervention.

Agenda
• how to conduct a virtual home observation to capture early signs of autism with video recording either through a telehealth appointment or uploaded ahead by families
• how to measure 22 early red flags of autism based on the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria using the SORF
• how Autism Navigator and Baby Navigator online resources can help

This free webinar is for diagnostic team members, interdisciplinary healthcare professionals, early intervention providers, and early childhood specialists. Very soon, we will let you know about a special webinar for families.
Date: Thursday, April 23, 2020
Time: 12:30 to 2:00pm (Eastern Time)
Link to Register: https://bit.ly/2XKeVUH

The SORF is an evaluation tool used as a follow-up to a positive autism screen in primary care or for children referred to a specialty clinic for concerns about autism. We will show video clips from virtual observations to illustrate how to rate autism symptoms using the SORF. We will have a Q&A after each agenda topic.

We cannot record our webinars because we show photos and videos of our families, so make sure to register with the link above. Please share this invitation with colleagues who may have an interest in learning about using the SORF virtually to improve early detection of autism.

Help spread the word by sharing this with your friends.
