Ancient Wisdom, Mental Health, and The War on Drugs: Interview with Duncan Trussell

If we lived in a sane society, we’d follow some patterns that were set out in earlier cultures where there was an initiatory period for a child. A lot of times kids start experimenting with psychedelics right around the same time that in a tribal culture they would be taken through an initiation ceremony. They might be invited to learn the deeper secret of the tribe or given some kind of name or some information that they could apply for the rest of their lives, and a lot of times there would be a psychedelic sacrament involved. That’s a very important cultural structure, but what is that for us now? “I’m gonna get ya a Bud Light, son—welcome to manhood!”

Philip Seymour Hoffman and a Simple Solution for America’s He**in Addiction

In the states, there’s a degree of mystery surrounding the process of ibogaine. This state of affairs is hardly an accident. Most scientists at R1 schools (especially those with a research budget to lose) are uncomfortable speaking publicly about the treatment because to do so is to league oneself with the black sheep of the American scientific community—psychedelic researchers, a culture still stained by the legacy of Timothy Leary’s decades-long L*D boosterism. Even tenured researchers express a certain skittishness when the subject arises. Organizations such as the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) seek to mend this division within the medical community, so far without much luck.

Rick Doblin, who earned a Ph.D. in public policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School and co-founded MAPS, has been a vocal proponent of psychedelic therapy since the mid-1980s and has helped produce recent MAPS studies on ibogaine’s promising curative applications in New Zealand and Mexico. Doblin also self-administered ibogaine in 1985 (video here) and tells me that “[ibogaine] remains one of the most important psychedelic experiences of my life, and one of the most important experiences of any kind. It has unique potential for helping people go through op**te withdrawal.”

Iboga, An Ancient Treasure of the Earth

by Elizabeth Bast

Iboga is a plant medicine held sacred by the indigenous people of Central West Africa and has been taken in ceremonies since ancient times for spiritual initiation and healing.

Like Ayahuasca, San Pedro (Huachuma), Pe**te, and Psilocybin mushrooms, it is a sacred visionary plant medicine, yet iboga is an utterly unique spirit. More recently, iboga and its active alkaloid ibogaine have been proven to have powerful addiction breaking effects in medical studies and observational research.

When my mother first read my memoir about our experience with iboga (she’s a cool mom, alright), she said, “I feel like I’ve taken iboga just from reading this book.” Not everyone needs to take iboga, for it is an extremely powerful visionary medicine. This journey is not to be taken lightly. Maybe reading the book is enough iboga for you. Maybe there is another kind of medicine for you, as contraindications must be considered, and there are many different kinds of mental, physical, and spiritual medicine on this planet to suit billions of radically different human beings.

Is iboga for you? Listen for the quiet call of the soul.

Why Is the U.S. Disregarding Plants Like Iboga and Kratom in the Fight Against Overdose and Addiction?
By Dominique F on Wednesday, August 14, 2019
With overdose death rates more than doubling in the U.S. since 2000, we need to be examining every possible avenue to save lives and reduce the harms of drug misuse and addiction.

Two medicinal plants, kratom and iboga, have been used for hundreds and thousands of years in other parts of the world and show promise as tools in addiction treatment. Yet the United States’ outdated drug war approach is standing in the way.

The naturally-occurring substance ibogaine is derived from the iboga plant, which native to West Africa, where it has been used in healing rituals and initiation ceremonies as part of the Bwiti religion in Gabon for hundreds of years. Since the 1960s, it has been used to help treat people suffering from seemingly-intractable problems with addiction. Larger doses of ibogaine can briefly eliminate substance-related cravings and reduce withdrawal symptoms from op**tes.

Like many of the most-known psychedelic drugs – L*D, psilocybin, ayahuasca – ibogaine has long been used as an adjunct to psychotherapy and other therapeutic modalities.Ibogaine, however, is rarely used as a recreational drug, due to the overpowering intensity and long duration of its effects, often lasting 24-48 hours.
