Life update! I know it’s been a while since I posted. Some of you know that when the pandemic hit and we moved back to MD, doulas were still being barred from the hospital. I was anxious to keep supporting families and be able to be there for people when they need support.

So, I went to nursing school and yesterday, I walked the stage and received my pin as well as induction into Alpha Delta Nu honors society.

I have a job in L&D supporting very vulnerable populations who have had little prenatal care and little education about birth and parenting. I’m honored to be on this path and look forward to learning and growing as a nurse 🥰

Emergence...
As many more of us are beginning to “see the light” when it comes to our own white privilege, let’s remember, too, that racism affects babies and birthing people before birth. Did you know that black birthing people are 3-4x more likely to die in childbirth than white people? Rates of preterm birth, low birth weight, and infant mortality are also higher among black communities. Various research studies have found that the cause of these disparities boils down to racism. The micro aggressions POCs face on a daily basis contribute to high levels of stress hormones that wreak havoc on health.

So, as you emerge into this world, which has existed since time immemorial, take a moment to notice your own privilege and then please use it! Use it to lift black voices! Use it to share power! Use it to make a better future for all the children that are not born with ignorance but are taught it.
