Stress fractures are tiny hairline breaks that can occur in the bones of the foot that can be caused by overtraining or overuse, improper training habits or surfaces, improper shoes, flatfoot or other foot deformities and osteoporosis. The fracture can occur almost anywhere in the foot. Pain, swelling, redness and bruising are a few of the signs of a stress fracture. If you suspect you may have a stress fracture, see Dr. Cherrie Cindric or Dr. Todd Cindric as soon as possible to start treatment and possibly shorten recovery time. If left untreated, these tiny breaks in the bones can lead to a complete break.

Spring and summer bring longer days and, for many children, lots of outdoor activity. Increased participation in outdoor sports can also increase the number of foot and ankle injuries, particularly for children who play field sports. Ankle sprains alone account for 10 percent of all injuries seen in emergency departments. Parents should watch for symptoms of common sport injuries, including pain during normal activity, swelling, bruising, and in more serious cases, tissue tears. Check out this helpful infographic for more information on how to help protect your kid’s feet and keep them in the game.

The foot contains 26 bones and more than 30 joints. Pain in one or more of these joints is not uncommon. It may be accompanied by swelling, tenderness, stiffness, redness, bruising, and/or increased warmth over the affected joints. Joint pain may be caused by trauma, infection, inflammation, arthritis, bursitis, gout, or structural foot problems. It is initially treated with rest, elevation, and limitation of walking/weight-bearing on the painful foot.
Anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen and ice can help reduce local inflammation and pain. Custom orthotic devices may also be prescribed to support the foot and reduce pain. Dr. Cherrie and Dr. Todd Cindric can best determine the cause of joint pain and recommend the appropriate treatment.

Having diabetes increases the risk of developing a wide range of foot problems, often because of two complications of the disease: nerve damage (neuropathy) and poor circulation. Untreated diabetes can result in other conditions like diabetic peripheral neuropathy and charcot foot. This infographic provides helpful tips for caring for your feet if you have diabetes. Make Dr. Cherrie Cindric or Dr. Todd Cindric part of your medical team.

A soft-tissue biopsy is the removal of a small sample of soft tissue for microscopic examination and diagnosis. Soft tissue includes the skin, fat, muscle and tendons that surround, connect or support other tissues or organs. Biopsies are generally quick to take and enable the foot and ankle surgeon to reach an accurate diagnosis and determine the best treatment for conditions like melanoma or skin cancer, rashes, lesions, psoriasis and keratoses, among others.

Did you know athletes living with diabetes are at a significantly greater risk of sustaining stress fractures, sprains and other foot and ankle injuries than nondiabetic athletes? A key reason is that many athletes living with diabetes have neuropathy, the diminished sensation from nerve damage in the foot, and are simply not aware that they’ve been injured or have pain. Other foot problems associated with the disease can include poor circulation coupled with a compromised immune system that increases the risk of infection and the restricted delivery of oxygen and other nutrients to the affected area. This does not mean that athletes living with diabetes must stay away from sports and exercise. The point is that athletes living with diabetes must take special care of their feet and should make an appointment with Dr. Cherrie Cindric or Dr. Todd Cindric as part of their care team.

If you are suffering from heel pain, you are not alone. According to foot and ankle surgeons, heel pain continues to be the most common reason patients seek care. The best defense to keeping pain in control is early treatment. Heel pain can have many different causes with the most common being plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the band of tissue (plantar fascia) that extends from the heel to the toes.
The good news is that heel pain is treatable. The key to success in eliminating the pain is early treatment; heel pain can turn chronic and debilitating if not cared for promptly When conservative therapies do not provide relief after several months, surgery may be considered. If you have chronic heel pain, see Dr. Cherrie Cindric or Dr. Todd Cindric right away.
