We’re separating myths and facts when it comes to diabetes. This week’s myth: Diabetic wounds can be healed with aloe vera, arnica, or even onions! Fact: *Never* rely on home remedies to treat diabetic foot wounds, which place patients at high risk for life- and limb-threatening infection. It’s time to see a Dr. Cherrie Cindric or Dr. Todd Cindric at the first sign of a foot wound!

Runners specifically are at risk of stress fractures because of the repeated trauma to their feet and ankles. A stress reaction or fracture can result from increasing mileage, duration or speed too quickly. One specific overuse injury that can plague athletes is a navicular stress fracture, when the navicular bone - a boat-shaped bone located in the top inner side of the foot - is pinched or compressed by bones on either side, increasing the pressure inside the bone itself causing a break. Depending on the grade of the injury, a navicular stress fracture can take up to three to six months to heal. Runners must listen to their bodies, and call Dr. Cherrie or Dr. Todd Cindric to be seen!!

Chronic ankle instability is a condition characterized by a recurring giving way of the outer (lateral) side of the ankle often developing after repeated ankle sprains. People with chronic ankle instability often complain of:
- A repeated turning of the ankle, especially on uneven surfaces or when participating in sports
- Persistent (chronic) discomfort and swelling
- Pain or tenderness
- The ankle feeling wobbly or unstable
Physical therapy, bracing and medications are typical treatments that can get people back to full function. In some cases, surgery may be needed based on the degree of instability or lack of response to nonsurgical approaches. Surgery usually involves repair or reconstruction of the damaged ligament(s). If you suffer from ankle instability, Call Dr. Cherrie Cindric or Dr. Todd Cindric to be seen!!

Stress fractures are tiny hairline breaks that can occur in the bones of the foot that can be caused by overtraining or overuse, improper training habits or surfaces, improper shoes, flatfoot or other foot deformities and osteoporosis. The fracture can occur almost anywhere in the foot. Pain, swelling, redness and bruising are a few of the signs of a stress fracture. If you suspect you may have a stress fracture, see Dr. Cherrie Cindric or Dr. Todd Cindric as soon as possible to start treatment and possibly shorten recovery time. If left untreated, these tiny breaks in the bones can lead to a complete break.

Spring and summer bring longer days and, for many children, lots of outdoor activity. Increased participation in outdoor sports can also increase the number of foot and ankle injuries, particularly for children who play field sports. Ankle sprains alone account for 10 percent of all injuries seen in emergency departments. Parents should watch for symptoms of common sport injuries, including pain during normal activity, swelling, bruising, and in more serious cases, tissue tears. Check out this helpful infographic for more information on how to help protect your kid’s feet and keep them in the game.
