🔵"Dilation station" a.k.a. the "GET IT DONE position." 💪🏽🔵

Most of my clients know that I love using the toilet for labor. It's the best way to release a pelvic floor and help a baby descend into the pelvis. The contractions are super intense on the potty, but that's because they are super productive! Trust me when I tell you, this is one of the all time best labor positions!

🚽you are naturally prone to relaxing your pelvic floor and perineum while sitting on the toilet.
🚽the bathroom is a place of privacy and solitude and you are used to relaxing in this room.
🚽you are using gravity
🚽you are opening your pelvis.
🚽you are allowing your baby lots of room to rotate and navigate the birth canal.
🚽you can also turn around and straddle the toilet with a pillow in front of you for comfort.

I call it the “dilation station” for a reason. I’ve encouraged many mommies to spend some time laboring on the toilet. It’s not uncommon for baby to come rather quickly after that 🤗

This is what home birth looks like,

Midwives sitting at the table chatting, sipping coffee and water.

Your best friend sitting on the floor playing with your toddler.

Your partner holding your hand while you work with the waves that rush over you to bring your baby into this universe.

Home birth isn’t how the movies depict birth. It isn’t an agonizing mother in hospital bed. It isn’t a woman who’s left to do the work all on her own. It isn’t unfamiliar doctors and nurses ushering in & out of your hospital room.

Birth is,
Powerful.
A rite of passage.
Transforming.
Empowering.
Normal.

Creepy dudes from the 1600's are why you gave birth on your back.
Lying on your back to give birth closes down your pelvis and almost always increases pain. So why is this the most commonly used position for birth in the Western world today?
Because of King Louis XIV & Dr. Françios Marcineau.
At a time when only women attended births, it's reported that King Louis XIV insisted on watching his offspring be born. He didn't like the obstructed view caused by a birthing stool (most common position at the time), so he insisted his wife or mistress give birth on her back with her legs in stirrups.
Once word got out that this is how royalty gave birth, the new position began to gain popularity.
At the same time, French doctor Marcineau, who believed pregnancy to be pathological, thought women would breathe more easily and have reduced pain when lying in bed for birth. His view of pregnancy as a disease had a hand in the change from midwife-attended birth to the primarily surgeon-attended birth that we see today.
Though this position is usually the worst option for the woman giving birth, it is still the easiest & most comfortable for those attending the birth. The doctor/midwife/nurse can simply sit on a stool and have a perfect visual, which is a good part of why it is still used today.

Smiling and happy. This mama at this point was on the edge of transition. Her attitude in labor even in the tough parts was one of joy and love. She would come out of the surges, that were like waves tumbling down on her, and beam this smile of pure childlike joy and wonder. Her husband Mark was loving and oh so present, so supportive. He did an incredible job, I was so impressed. These two made a great labor and birth team. They were in this labor for the long haul of over 45 hours. With all kinds of twist and turns in their labor she remained undaunted. She was prepared for the journey and trusted it completely. She was just magnificent. And their awe and respect for one another is incredibly inspiring. And their baby...one good looking, hardworking, team oriented little guy.

👉🏽That first postpartum p*e makes me think I’d rather just give birth again.
_
So how do you p*e without screaming or crying? Well... it’s kinda impossible. My peri bottle was my lifesaver along with my benzocaine spray.
_
What really got me through these first terrible bathroom trips was knows that each p*e was bring me closer to throwing out that peri bottle and spray.
_
Postpartum recovery is tough. I’d say it’s tougher than labor and delivery for some. But as we all know, the mental and physical toll is worth it for us to hold our little ones in our arms.
_
I see you and I wrap my arms around you with a big warm hug.

How was your first postpartum p*e? Are you prepared for your first postpartum p*e?
