This month: Snapshots in Body Weight Management and Nutrition

Body weight is related to many factors, only some of which are under a person's control. The primary care clinician can provide guidance to patients regarding nutrition and physical activity.

Particular attention in this module has been given to the management of childhood obesity and nutritional concerns in older adults, as obesity levels in youth rise and the proportion of older Canadians increases.

The benefits of plant-based diets, features of popular diets, and the harms of ultra-processed foods are discussed, in addition to physical activity.

FMPE produces fourteen modules each year. The topics cover a wide array of primary care practice issues. Module topics are selected using a rigorous process, which includes input from PBLP members and facilitators and a scan of recent literature and guidelines to determine what clinical topics are most relevant to practicing family physician members.

TMU School of Medicine Welcomes Inaugural Residents & Opens New State-of-the-Art Facility in Brampton

Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) has marked a historic milestone with the official opening of its School of Medicine in Brampton—the first new medical school in the Greater Toronto Area in more than a century.

This momentous launch comes at a pivotal time, as physician shortages and the changing demands of Ontario’s health care system highlight the need for innovative, community-focused approaches to medical education.

What is Atrial Fibrillation (AF)?

Atrial fibrillation is one reason why your heart might not beat regularly. It is a common heart condition, especially as you get older (1 in 10 people over age 80).
• AF can increase your chances of having a stroke.
• At first, AF may only happen once in a while, but it can gradually start to happen more often.

Suggested Tip
Aim for these weekly activity goals:
• Aerobic activity: 30 mins (or more)/day.
• Some type of strengthening exercise (such as light weights): 2–3 days/week.
• Stretching exercises: 10 mins/day, twice a week.

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility (EDIA) Survey Results

FMPE is committed to advancing Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA) across all programs. A May 2025 survey of PBLP members, completed by 370 respondents (6.4%), found strong appreciation for inclusive learning environments and supportive administration.

The survey was sent to all members, and 370 members completed the survey in its entirety.

Thank you to everyone who completed the survey! If you are a member with feedback about diverse representation of cases in modules, user friendliness of our website, training of facilitators, or any other topics related to EDIA, please reach out to the FMPE at fmpe@mcmaster.ca.

Dr. Loredana Di Santo became involved with FMPE early in her career through Foundation roundtables and was invited to join as a module author in 2012.

She develops clinically relevant, evidence-based learning modules grounded in real patient cases and refined through national physician discussions.

Working closely with medical writers and editors, she helps identify practice gaps and create practical tools for everyday care. One favourite project was the 2019 non-alcoholic fatty liver disease module, valued for its clear, structured clinical pathways.

Have you started planning your CME activities for 2026? 🤔

Our Practice-Based Learning Program (PBLP) focuses on family physicians identifying and addressing practice gaps.

You can discuss learning objectives with peers in a supportive facilitated setting, individually, or a combination of the two. Our longitudinal program centers on evidence-based learning modules and focused reflection encouraging successful practice change.

You can also fulfill all of your CME needs. Earn all the credits required by the CFPC, with options to earn Mainpro+ certified credits and Mainpro+ certified assessment credits. You would likely spend a lot more on a multi-day conference! ✅
