April 25 is World Malaria Day ( ). We have been so caught up and distracted by dealing with the COVID-19 epidemic that our attention to other deadly diseases worldwide has waned. Resources used to diagnose, prevent and treat the deadly diseases of malaria, tuberculosis and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV/AIDS) have been diverted to the fight with COVID-19 with often devastating consequences. Although we in the United States may feel protected from these other diseases, their lack of treatment elsewhere will likely come back to harm us, given international travel and given the continued development of drug-resistant organisms.
