It's World Breastfeeding Week! As a lactation care provider one of my top priorities is to protect a woman's ability to produce milk by educating on physiology of milk production, normal baby behaviors and overcoming challenges. Communities also work to protect breastfeeding by recognizing the importance of this first medicine for baby, and supporting mothers goals in breastfeeding their infants.

The Idaho State Breastfeeding Coalition advocates for Idaho mothers and families. The Mission of the Idaho Breastfeeding Coalition is to facilitate a community and statewide landscape that protects, supports and promotes breastfeeding as the biological norm for a healthier Idaho.

🌿❤️🌿Let us introduce one of our newest board members- Kristie Karroum!!🌿❤️🌿
Kristie has been an advocate for breastfeeding mothers for almost 20
years. She became an IBCLC after 10 years supporting families in NICU and childbirth center settings as a Registered Nurse. Much of her passion for breastfeeding support comes from her own breastfeeding journey with her two boys, experiencing the challenges that come with mothering and breastfeeding, and realizing the importance of being surrounded by a network of support. Her
work has included consultations in the hospital, clinic, community and
home environments, leading prenatal and postpartum
education classes, training hospital and pediatric clinic nursing
staff, developing policies and programs in support of
breastfeeding and serving as faculty at Idaho State University
teaching Maternal Family and Pediatric Nursing. As a Nurse Practitioner she founded Nurture Lactation
Support in 2018. As a home visit practice Nurture helps to eliminate physical and financial barriers to care with services delivered to the mother’s doorstep and billable to private insurance and Medicaid. Kristie’s mission is to empower all mothers to overcome challenges and reach their individual goals through evidence-based, judgement-free support.

I am thankful to offer support in my community as an IBCLC Nurse Practitioner. I often get asked, what is an IBCLC? Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant is the gold standard credential for knowledge, skill, support and advocacy for breastfeeding. The certification holds the highest standards in lactation and breastfeeding care that includes requiring over 1000 hours of lactation experience in addition to formal science education hours and adherence to a professional code of conduct. Around the world, there are currently approximately 32,500 IBCLCs in 122 countries and territories.
I became an IBCLC after 10 years of work as an RN in Neonatal Intensive Care and also after realizing the challenges involved with providing breastmilk to my own two children. I am grateful to belong to this profession and provide a high level of care and support to families who trust and include me in their parenting journey. đź’ś

It’s World Breastfeeding Week! About 80 percent of U.S. mothers initiate breastfeeding at birth, but only 25 percent are still exclusively breastfed at six months of age. Persistent racial and ethnic disparities in breastfeeding initiation and duration are caused in part by unequal access to breastfeeding supportive policies and environments. Every family that chooses breastfeeding should receive the support and resources they need to succeed.
