As of this morning, all social media posts will be through Harvard Fire-EMS as we continue to streamline our operations. Be sure to follow that page to stay up to date!

Effective July 1st 2024, Harvard Fire Department and Harvard Ambulance Service have been merged into a single department; Harvard Fire-EMS. We continue every day to work on integrating systems and operations, including our social media, branding etc. You will see some changes coming to this page over the next few weeks as we begin the process of combining social media pages.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING HARVARD AMBULANCE SERVICE SOCIAL MEDIA PAGES:

The Harvard Ambulance Service was officially merged with the Harvard Fire Department on July 1st, 2024, creating the new Harvard Fire-EMS Department. Already, this has allowed us to streamline many of our initiatives and operations to make us more successful in helping our community. Beginning on October 1st, we will merge our social media pages (Facebook, Instagram) to provide consistent, timely messaging and public education. The "Harvard Ambulance Service" pages will be merged into the "Harvard Fire-EMS" (Harvard Fire Department) Page. If you do not already follow the "Harvard Fire Department" page, be sure to click the "like" on that page to receive all Harvard EMS and Fire, updates, incident notifications, and public education.

We are excited to be expanding our public education and outreach work by combining our social media resources together!

As of this morning, August 30th, Nashoba Valley Medical Center has stopped accepting ambulances and will close tomorrow, August 31st. Chief Rick Sicard, EMS Coordinator Jason Cotting, and EMS leadership have been preparing for this day since news of NVMC's closure was first announced.

We have trained our EMS crews on identifying the closest facilities from each area of town, established new medical direction and hospital affiliation agreements, and collaborated with neighboring Fire and EMS agencies to ensure a coordinated response. We have also added a new vehicle to our fleet, "Car 3", which was Chief Sicard's former command vehicle. This vehicle will allow our crews to respond quickly to emergencies while awaiting a mutual aid ambulance in the event Harvard’s ambulance is unavailable due to longer turnaround times.

While the location of an emergency, traffic, and time of day must be taken into consideration, our new closest facilities are as follows:
Leominster Hospital 16 minutes, 12.6 miles.
Emerson Hospital 19 minutes, 14.3 miles
Clinton Hospital 17 minutes, 9.1 miles

Patients with certain conditions such as STEMI (heart attack), severe trauma, or stroke may require transport to specialty facilities. Sometimes we may use air ambulances from Boston MedFlight or LifeFlight for faster transport times to specialty hospitals. These hospitals include:

UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester
Lahey Hosptial, Burlington
Lowell General, Lowell

The closure of NVMC is a devastating loss to Harvard, our surrounding communities, and the EMS providers across the region. We are grateful for the many, many years that NVMC has provided high-quality medical care close to home, and we are especially grateful for the nurses, doctors, and other staff who made it such a great hospital to work with. Thank you from all of us at Harvard Fire-EMS.

Any questions or comments can be directed to the EMS coordinator Jason Cotting by calling (978) 456-4110 or emailing info@harvardems.org
