The first week of Independence College 2025-26 is in the books!

The students were busy and have already accomplished SO many things:

🏡Moved into their new apartments (some for the very 1st time!)
🥫Went grocery shopping
🍳🥪🍲Made 3 meals each day
👟Walked to & from class daily (already progressing to walking on their own!)
🍕Made homemade pizza
🎨Enjoyed a creative arts lesson
🚗Completed their transportation paperwork so they can begin learning to navigate their community independently
📖Visited the library
😎Made weekend plans with their fellow students

They've already begun making new friends and memories and learning skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives.

And the week's not even done yet - tonight? An ice cream party!

Sally is an On My Own of Michigan 'OG' who's been with the organization since the very beginning. She's been successfully living independently with us for almost 30 years and has a job at the local library that she absolutely loves! She shelves books, organizing them by both alpha & numeric, & keeps the shelves neat. She celebrated her 25th year with the library last year and is looking forward to her 26th anniversary in September. Here she's showing the bracelet she received in recognition for her years of service.

Sally loves being a part of the On My Own of Michigan Independent Living and Skill Building programs. She's enjoyed many summer trips (seeing the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. is one of her favorite memories), as well as the cooking classes where she's picked up recipes that are her go-to's when eating at home.

Sally truly is an inspiration and always brings a smile and a kind word for everyone she meets. We're so glad she's part of our community!

The travelers are back and the reviews are in - the New York City trip was a smashing success!

The Skill Building Program members enjoyed a busy few days in the Big Apple: they toured Central Park, visited the 9/11 Memorial Museum, experienced Times Square, ventured over to DUMBO, rode the subway, ate the bagels and the pizza, saw the Statue of Liberty, braved The Edge Observation Deck, walked the High Line, visited Chelsea Market and even took in a Broadway show! That's a LOT in 3 short days! (Having a Director of Education who lived in the city really helps when planning the perfect itinerary!)

It looks like there were just as many smiles as there were miles!

Let’s hear it for our Independent Living Program members!

Each person in the program sets goals that are as distinctive as they are. Some members are learning to prepare a new meal each month, while others are working to manage their budgets effectively. Some are focusing on keeping their apartments tidy and managing their medications on their own. One member is even mastering the ASL alphabet and is ready to move on to phrases.

The support provided by On My Own of Michigan empowers them to set goals and provides them with the necessary tools and guidance to achieve them. As of the end of June, an impressive 89% of program members achieved their monthly milestones.
