AAPB Co-sponsored Education:

Music, the Brain, and Healing - Science meets sound: discover how music supports healing and growth

Presented by:
by Barbara Minton, PhD – Private-practice psychologist

This research based, experiential workshop explores the profound impact of music on the brain, emotion, and overall well-being. Drawing on neuroscience, psychology, and clinical practice, participants will learn how music can influence brain states, enhance mental health, and support healing in diverse populations. The session integrates theory, research, and hands-on practice, providing participants with practical tools to apply in clinical, educational, or personal contexts.

Participants will learn how different elements of music—rhythm, melody, harmony, and timbre—interact with neural networks to affect mood, cognition, and physiological states. Techniques including guided listening, live musical demonstrations, and interactive exercises will illustrate how music can regulate the nervous system, reduce stress, and support emotional processing. The workshop will also address the use of music in neurofeedback, meditation, and therapeutic settings, highlighting evidence-based applications and considerations for diverse individuals.

Thursday, October 16, 2025
- 1 pm to 3 pm Eastern
- 12 pm to 2 pm Central
- 11 am to 1 pm Mountain
- 10 am to 12 pm Pacific

Research consistently shows that autonomic nervous system dysfunction underlies most chronic pain conditions, including chronic neck and back pain, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, temporomandibular joint disorder, and migraines. Heart rate variability (HRV) is used to quantify autonomic nervous system dysfunction. HRV biofeedback is an effective treatment that both improves the autonomic nervous system’s ability to regulate itself and ameliorates symptoms of chronic pain. In addition, people experiencing chronic pain may seek help from multiple providers, including chiropractors and mental health professionals. Each discipline addresses chronic pain in its own way. Sometimes, approaches are complementary and can easily be integrated. Other times, the patient may feel that they are getting contradictory advice and may not know what to do. It is, therefore, imperative for providers from different disciplines to coordinate treatment and, ideally, use an approach that unifies the different approaches into a cohesive, integrated one. HRV Biofeedback is one such unifying approach.

Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the role that autonomic nervous system dysfunction, as indexed by HRV, plays in most chronic pain conditions, including chronic neck and back pain, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, temporomandibular joint disorder, and migraines
- Describe ways in which chiropractors and mental health professionals may approach treatment of chronic pain
- Discuss ways in which HRV biofeedback plays a central role in each approach
Integrate HRV biofeedback into treatment of chronic pain

Level: INTRODUCTORY

Target Audience: Anyone interested in learning more about HRV biofeedback.

About this Presentation
TMS, is an effective treatment method for depression. In practice, different stimulation locations on the scalp can be used for TMS. An important question is how knowledge of functional networks in depression can lead to a better selection of TMS location, and thus a greater chance of treatment success. Although heuristics used in practice, such as the 5-centimeter rule and the Beam-F3 method, are effective methods, there is a clear development towards thinking in functional networks instead of anatomy. At the moment, there are two promising methods that may result in more personalized stimulation locations. Both methods utilize known functional networks in depression, with a focus on the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC). The first method comprises fMRI-based TMS targeted at prefrontal locations that are anti-correlated with activity in the sgACC.

Over the last few years we have taken this fMRI-based targeting approach as an inspiration and by further investigating the frontal-vagal network, that terminates at the vagal nerve, we have developed a technique that utilizes TMS induced Heart-Brain-Coupling by only looking at heart-rate. Validation and replication studies will be presented, along with fMRI and DBS validation work, how this biomarker helps establish and individualizes frontal excitability threshold and recent work that validates the implications of heart-brain coupling for clinical response. Implications from a biofeedback perspective will be discussed.

NEWLY LISTED EVENT!

AAPB Virtual Education: The Impact of Infra-Low Frequency Neurofeedback on Post-Concussive Symptoms

Presented by Dr. Judy Carlson, EdD, MSN, APRN, BCN fellow

This presentation will be a report of funded 5-year randomized control trial conducted by an interdisciplinary research team to evaluate the impact infra-low-frequency neurofeedback (ILF NFB), a new paradigm in the field, has on post-concussive symptoms of headache, sleep and attention disorders experienced by combat Veterans. ILF NFB intervention, a non-invasive and integrative health intervention, has demonstrated clinical efficacy in treating several physical and psychological conditions, including headaches, dysregulated sleep, and attentional dysfunctions. Given that 20-40% of combat Veterans who experienced concussions during recent military operations suffer chronically from these disorders, this study aimed to determine whether ILF NFB might be an effective treatment option.
