Lung cancer is treatable—especially when it’s caught early. This World Lung Cancer Day, VA encourages eligible Veterans to get screened. VA offers free annual lung cancer screening with low-dose CT scan. You may be eligible for screening if you are 50-80 years old, currently smoke or quit within the last 15 years, or have a smoking history of at least 20 pack-years (1 pack per day for 20 years or 2 packs per day for 10 years, etc.). Talk to your VA provider about getting screened. If you smoke, ask about support to help you quit.

Congratulations to our most recent DAISY Award honoree – Cathy Galvan! Galvan, a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), has served Veterans at our Staunton Outpatient Clinic for more than 12 years.

“I’m humbled to receive this award, it’s an honor to work with the team here at Staunton – they lift you up and support you,” she said. “When Veterans leave our clinic, I want them to leave knowing they had a great experience. I’m thankful to be able to care for those who served our community and nation.”

Galvan’s ability to personally connect with and understand Veterans comes naturally; she served our nation as a Munitions Systems Specialist in the Air Force from 1980 to 1992 and her drive to continue serving her fellow servicemen and women is endless.

One Veteran wrote in their award nomination for Galvan that, “Her ability to combine technical expertise with heartfelt compassion made all the difference… Cathy treats every Veteran who walks through the door with the utmost respect and care, making us feel valued and heard. She is not just a nurse – she is a healer, a comforter, and a true advocate for Veterans’ well-being.”

Please join us in applauding Ms. Galvan for her service to Veterans and our nation.

Join us in saying “welcome home” to Vietnam Veteran Ralph Hubble.

Our Executive Director, Dr. Rebecca Stackhouse, along with Mr. William Barksdale, Assistant Director of the Roanoke Regional Veterans Benefits Administration Office, presented Mr. Hubble, an Army combat Veteran, with a 50th anniversary commemorative pin and Presidential proclamation recognizing his service to our nation.

Mr. Hubble served as a Mechanic in the Army – servicing tanks, cars, and helicopters while deployed to Vietnam. He served from 1968 to 1969 in the 25th Infantry Division and received a Bronze Star for his service.

“It was an honor for me to serve my country, and I would do it again in a heartbeat,” Hubble said. “I’m thankful for this pin and hope those who served with me in Vietnam or here at home during the war receive it – they earned it.”

All Vietnam-era Veterans who have not received this commemorative pin and Presidential proclamation will be presented with these items at our Danville Outpatient Clinic Open House (8/15/2025 at noon), Tazewell Outpatient Clinic Open House (8/21/2025 at 11 a.m.), and our Veteran Town Hall (9/4/2025 at noon) in the Auditorium of the Salem VA Medical Center.

Thanks to all Veterans who attended today’s Open House at our Staunton VA Outpatient Clinic! Our clinic team has 32 staff who combine to offer Primary Care, Psychiatry, Psychology, Social Work, Physical Therapy, Laboratory, Orthopedics, Cardiology, Podiatry, and Gastroenterology services to the greater Staunton community and beyond.

At today’s Open House, multiple Veterans said the clinic team “feels like family” and takes the time to know each Veteran’s needs – providing them the personalized care they’ve earned for protecting the freedoms we enjoy each day.

The Staunton VA Outpatient Clinic earned 100% monthly Veteran trust scores twice this fiscal year and is on track to do so again this month.

Congratulations to our most recent Daisy Award honoree!
Debra Simpkins has been a nurse with the VA for 16 years and, during a scheduled routine appointment, Ms. Simpkins was able to use her experience to identify that a Veteran was having an emergency health event he was not aware of. Immediately getting the help he needed; Ms. Simpkins stayed with the Veteran to provide support and explain what was happening as emergency staff provided the care he required.

Ms. Simpkins' professional acumen launched life-saving interventions for a Veteran on a day that started like any other.

Thank you to Debra Simpkins for her quick thinking and commitment to the Nation’s Veterans.
