Twitter! Our primary focus is helping people who suffer with severe and chronic back and neck pain. Our doctors’ interests lie in the influence manual therapies can have on chronic spinal pain, spinal stenosis, disc herniation and degenerative spinal disorders. A large percentage of our patients are referred to our office after spinal surgery and other interventions have failed. Our treatment focus is on instrument adjusting techniques that do not typically involve “cracking and popping” of the spine. We participate fully with most insurances including Medicare. Our associate doctor is Dr. Daniel Carlson. He received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1977 graduate from National Chiropractic College/National University of Health Sciences. All of our doctors are licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine

The WHY of combining exercise with our treatments.

Combining different forms of Manual Therapy with exercise is better than MT or exercise alone, and mobilization need not be applied at the symptomatic level(s) for improvements of NP patients.

Less than 10% of Americans do resistance training. Even though the evidence on overall health is overwhelming. Reduced cancer rates, improved cardiovascular function, increased strength and muscle mass, decreased anxiety and depression are just some of the benefits of routine resistance training.

But resistance training or strength training is intimidating to a lot of people. That's certainly one of the main reasons that so few people do it.

This study looked at the effects of how often we perform resistance training to improve muscular strength. It also looked at the rate of perceived exertion (RPE). Think of RPE as how much doing the exercise sucks.

Let's say that I wanted you to try to do step ups on the first stair in your stairway. And lets say I told you to try to do 3 sets of 10 with each leg twice per week. (60 reps per week)

Some of you may find 3 sets of 10 a completely miserable and soul sucking experience. Thus the idea of doing it twice per week (60 reps per week) may be OUT OF THE QUESTION!

Well how about this? You could try to do 10 step ups per day - still 60 reps per week and you get 1 day off! That's the same weekly volume of that strengthening exercise with less soul sucking feeling (remember the RPE).

This study shows us that it's probably just as effective to spread your workout out! So do a little everyday and GET STRONGER!

Background In resistance training, the role of training frequency to increase maximal strength is often debated. However, the limited data available does not allow for clear training frequency “optimization” recommendations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of training fr...

Protein helps our muscles 💪🏼. Get plenty of it in your diet and it doesn’t matter what kind. Milk, plant, whey, meat...they all work.

Keep up your resistance exercise and eat your protein. You’ll be stronger and healthier as a result.

Plant-derived proteins have been suggested to have less anabolic properties when compared with animal-derived proteins. Whether blends of plant- and animal-derived proteins can compensate for their lesser anabolic potential has not been assessed. This study compares post-prandial muscle protein synt...

ACA Encouraged by Expansion of Chiropractic Services to Military Exchanges

Arlington, Va. – The American Chiropractic Association (ACA), a longtime advocate for increasing availability and coverage of chiropractic services in the military community, is encouraged by news that the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) will offer chiropractic services at six U.S. locations beginning this year. The development could signal positive changes to come in respect to coverage of chiropractic services for military families and retirees.

Chiropractic services were first made available to the military community in 2000, following the enactment of ACA-championed legislation to create a permanent chiropractic benefit for active-duty personnel. Dependents and retirees, however, still lack chiropractic coverage under the military’s civilian healthcare program, known as TRICARE.

“We believe the change at AAFES is a harbinger for expanded services in the coming months,” said John Falardeau, ACA senior vice president of public policy and advocacy. “We learned in 2019 of the Pentagon’s plans to increase access to chiropractic for TRICARE beneficiaries in 2021, and we anticipate that growth to continue.”

AAFES makes competitively priced goods and services available to the military community at more than 3,000 locations worldwide. Many locations also offer healthcare services for vision, dental and durable medical equipment onsite. The military’s decision to add chiropractic services at select exchange locations is an acknowledgement that those services are valued and needed by members of the military as well as their dependents and retirees who are also permitted to shop and use the services of AAFES facilities.

Chiropractic services are available today to active-duty members at more than 60 military bases in the United States, Germany and Japan. As part of the pilot program that tested the benefit—before full implementation—retirees were also granted access to chiropractic services on a space-available basis. At the time, it was noted that the benefit was valued by members of the TRICARE community, which includes not only dependents and retirees but also survivors of military personnel.

As with any condition, creating a conservative treatment plan both is a science and an art – tying together evidence-based clinical decision making and patient preferences.

Welcome back to the Head to Sacrum series on Spine IQ’s Back Blog. This week we continue our discussion about acute neck pain, with a focus on clinical management strategies. Once acute neck pain has been graded and the cause is determined to be mechanical, conservative care clinicians can begin t...

Evidence supports the treatment of acute neck pain that is structural in origin by doctors of chiropractic, either autonomously or as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The overwhelming majority of current clinical practice guidelines recommend the use of multimodal care as a primary management strategy, which includes a combination of exercise, manual therapies and modalities, in addition to proper patient education. Research shows that both educating patients on the likely benign nature of acute neck pain as well as actively involving them in their treatment plan is crucial. (2)

At The Spine Center, our evidence based approach is well supported in the medical literature. Manual therapies combined with targeted exercise therapy can have great effects on chronic spinal pain, spinal stenosis, disc herniation and painfully degenerative spinal disorders. A large percentage of our patients are referred to our office after spinal surgery and other interventions have failed. Our treatment focus is on establishing a protocol of exercise and manual therapy techniques specific to the patient’s problem. Treatments do NOT involve “cracking and popping” of the spine.

Local specialists (including neurosurgery, pain management, orthopedics, rheumatology and PCPs) routinely refer to our practice. They trust our approach with their patients. We participate fully with most insurances including Medicare.
