As September arrives, the long bright days of summer give way to crisp mornings and earlier sunsets. Many of us feel a natural pull to return to routine such as cooking more at home, getting to bed earlier, and craving warm comfort foods. But, this seasonal shift doesn’t always feel seamless.

🍂You may notice:

Seasonal allergies begin to flare with the fall allergens

Sleep changes, like waking at night or feeling less rested.

Lower moods or less motivation as daylight decreases.

A sense that your energy is a little uneven as you settle back into your daily schedule.

These experiences are common this time of year. In Chinese medicine, fall is linked with the Lung and Large Intestine organ systems that help us take in what we need and let go of what we don’t. It’s a season of transition, reflection, and preparation for the colder months ahead.

🍂How acupuncture supports you in autumn:

Acupuncture helps your body stay balanced as the seasons change. This is a time of year we suggest a ‘tune up’ treatment, especially if you have struggled with seasonal changes in the past.
Acupuncture treatments can:

Reduce congestion and ease seasonal allergies by regulating the immune system.

Improve sleep quality and energy by calming the nervous system and restoring natural rhythms.

Lift low moods by improving circulation and supporting healthy brain chemistry.

Help you feel more grounded and settle into healthy routines, like earlier bedtimes and nourishing meals.

🍂Small shifts to feel your best this season

Favor warming, cooked foods: think soups, stews, and roasted root vegetables.

Listen to your body’s cues and give yourself permission for earlier nights.

Keep your immune system strong with hydration, movement, and consistent acupuncture care.

Fall is a time to align with nature’s rhythm and letting go of what no longer serves you and building a foundation for the months ahead.
🍁If you’ve noticed seasonal changes affecting your sleep, mood, or energy, now is the perfect time to schedule an acupuncture appointment. Let us help you feel steady, clear, and ready for autumn.

Welcome to the Selby Acupuncture team Amy! 🎉

Amy earned her Master’s degree in Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine from Northwestern Health Sciences University in 2005, is licensed by the Minnesota Medical Board, and is nationally board-certified by the NCCAOM.
After a decade in practice she took a sabbatical to learn other healing modalities that she could bring back to her practice in Minnesota. In 2015, she became a certified practitioner of Mayan Abdominal Therapy and expanded her energy healing work through Reiki. In 2023, she completed an intensive program to advance her medical intuition and energy healing skills—an invaluable tool when working with complex or “unexplained” issues ranging from fertility challenges to chronic or autoimmune conditions and mental health concerns.

Drawing from a deep well of traditional healing wisdom, heart-centered intuition, and a solid foundation in the science of body-mind health, Amy provides personalized, nuanced care for every patient. She is especially passionate about women’s health, including fertility and high-risk pregnancy, as well as chronic illnesses and emotional well-being.

At home, Amy is mom to two wonderful children she shares with her wife. She finds joy in tending her expansive bee and food gardens, cuddling with their dog, cat, and bearded dragon, and connecting with her community. A lover of nature and adventure, she also leads wellness and wilderness retreats—creating spaces where true healing and transformation can unfold.

“I believe that every person has the ability to move beyond coping and managing symptoms to thriving with vitality, peace, and joy. I meet people where they are at in their healing journey and feel honored to be a part of guiding them toward their optimal selves.”

Just as the sun rises and sets each day, and the seasons follow their natural cycle, our bodies also have rhythms that are guided by nature. Our bodies truly thrive on routines and predictably. One of the most impactful rhythms your body depends on is sleep. Maintaining consistent sleep means going to bed and waking up at approximately the same time each day, including weekends. This helps regulate your body’s internal clock (your circadian rhythm) so you can fall asleep more easily, enjoy deeper, more restorative sleep, and wake feeling refreshed.

Practical ways to strengthen your body’s natural rhythm:

1. Set regular sleep and wake times. Aim to stay within a 30–60 minute window each day, even on days off.

2. Establish a calming routine before bed. Spend the last 30–60 minutes engaging in quiet activities such as light stretching, meditation, reading, or listening to soothing music.

3. Seek morning sunlight. Exposure to daylight soon after waking helps reinforce your circadian rhythm and supports better sleep at night.

4. Be mindful of caffeine and screens. Avoid caffeine for at least eight hours before bedtime, and limit screen use in the evening to reduce blue light interference with melatonin production.

5. Maintain consistency, even after late nights. If you go to bed later than usual, wake close to your normal time and adjust with an earlier bedtime the following night.

6. Support your sleep with acupuncture. Research shows that acupuncture can help regulate the nervous system, reduce stress, and improve sleep quality. When combined with consistent sleep practices, it can strengthen your body’s natural rhythm and promote restorative rest.

The science: A consistent sleep schedule allows the body to release sleep-promoting hormones at predictable times, making it easier to both fall asleep and wake naturally. Irregular sleep patterns, however, can disrupt this rhythm, resulting in less restorative rest and negatively affecting mood, concentration, and immune function.

We are thrilled to formally introduce you to our two newest team members, Angie and Liz. Some of you may have already had the pleasure of meeting them, but we wanted to share a little more about them to help you get to know them better.

Good news is, so far, we've been able to cover these increases ourselves, meaning our prices for you haven't changed. We're trying our best to keep it that way without cutting corners on the quality of the products we use and prescribe.

"I began working with Molly shortly after starting chemo to treat colon cancer. Her treatments, usually scheduled shortly after the chemical infusions, mitigated the side effects dramatically, especially the low energy and queasiness, and have helped to ease both the focal neuropathy and peripheral neuropathy. Her treatments have also helped in the healing of my surgeries. In addition to her skill, Molly’s bedside manner is both warm and competent, which allows me the room I need to relax and be comfortable and receptive to treatment. Molly is also very good at explaining what she is doing in language that I can understand. She is sensitive to my particular circumstances, and is consistently kind and respectful. I highly recommend her."

💜We appreciate your reviews! Our goal is to make the cancer treatment journey as comfortable as possible.

☯️Acupuncture has gained recognition for its ability to improve the quality of life for cancer patients.
It can help alleviate pain and anxiety, reduce treatment side effects like nausea and fatigue, and support your body’s natural healing processes.

☯️The National Cancer Institute has noted that acupuncture may stimulate the body in beneficial ways.
It can trigger responses in nerve cells, the pituitary gland, and parts of the brain, potentially leading to the release of natural painkillers and other helpful substances.
This may help regulate blood pressure, body temperature, and boost your immune system; all of which can be valuable during cancer treatment.

⚡🌧️👋Having joint pain from the recent storms? A lot of people notice their joints hurt more when it rains or storms. We commonly see this in clinic (especially this super rainy summer!)

In Chinese medicine, we call this Bi Syndrome, which means an obstruction in the joints. Dampness from the environment, like rainy or humid weather, settles into the body and blocks the free flow of circulation.
That’s why joints can feel heavy, achy, or stiff, especially when it’s damp and cold outside. We treat it by using acupuncture, warming techniques, and herbs to move out that dampness and improve circulation.

Interestingly, modern research shows that changes in barometric pressure during storms can affect the tissues around your joints. The drop in pressure can make tendons and ligaments expand slightly, increasing pain if the joint is already inflamed.

😏So essentially, Chinese medicine and Western science are describing the same phenomenon in different ways. Pretty interesting stuff!

Why You Might Be Feeling Off Right Now 🛌
As soon as someone starts mentioning the State Fair, we might mentally start counting down the last precious weeks of summer. But, even if you’re not consciously thinking about fall, your body and mind are responding to the seasonal shift. You may notice:

▫️A drop in energy or motivation
▫️Trouble concentrating or completing tasks
▫️Feeling emotionally heavy or a bit anxious
▫️Increased worry or anticipation about fall routines
▫️A craving for more routine or structure, but resistance to change

We often think of change as something that happens in September or October, but your system is already adapting now. That in-between feeling can be uncomfortable—and completely normal.

Late Summer is associated with the Earth element, which governs digestion, nourishment, stability, and mental clarity. When Earth is balanced, we feel grounded, focused, and well-nourished—physically and emotionally. But when it’s out of balance, it can show up as fatigue, worry, and a sense of being “stuck”, feeling heavy in our bodies and our spirits.

You don’t have to power through or pretend everything is fine. This is a time to slow down, reflect, and gently prepare for the transition ahead.

Here are a few ways to support yourself:

🪷Simplify Where You Can
Late Summer isn’t about starting something new or cramming more in. Instead, give yourself permission to scale back—whether it’s fewer commitments, easier meals, or looser routines. This is a time of year that an afternoon nap or lounging with a great book on the weekend is encouraged.

🪷Acupuncture Can Help You Transition Smoothly
Seasonal transitions are one of the best times to receive acupuncture. We have a number of people that just come a few times a year to help them adjust to the changes of the seasons.

If you’ve been feeling off, this is your invitation to reconnect and realign. 🧘
