September is back to school month and whether students are returning to school, learning remotely or a combination of both, it is important to pay special attention to their mental health needs, especially those who may be at high risk:
• Check on and follow up with those who may be in crisis
• Create case coordination across systems to better inform those working with the student and provide seamless care
• Maintain a focus on improving the educational status of the student
• Focus on long term plans and options as student moves away from acute crisis

“Don’t worry, be happy!” sang Bobby McFerrin back in 1988.

But that’s easier sung than done. Yet at the same time, research shows that a positive disposition can result in better decision-making, increased creativity, more effective problem-solving and improved relationships. Who doesn’t need to be happy, especially in these times?

Positive and Negative Emotions

Psychologist Barbara Fredrickson’s research has led to her Broaden-and-Build Theory of Positive Emotions. According to the theory, positive emotions expand our thinking and behavior. Unlike negative emotions that tend to result in specific actions, positive emotions broaden the range of actions we might take. They literally increase the number of behaviors we are able to see.

https://positivepsychology.com/broaden-build-theory

The broaden-and build-theory could be defined as a model for explaining the mechanisms behind positive emotions in our minds and bodies, what their effects are, what the evolutionary reason is behind them and why studying them is so important for our well-being.

Quick, what are you feeling right now?

Think about the words you used to describe that feeling. A significant number of scholars have settled upon six emotions that seem to be universal: anger, fear, sadness, happiness, disgust, and surprise. How many other words can you think of to describe these same emotions? There are hundreds of words in our vocabulary that name emotions yet we use so few to describe what we are feeling.

To get kids to talk about their feelings, they need the right words. Use a list of feeling words to help build an emotional vocabulary for your child.

Needs, Energy, Emotions

There is a tight connection between our needs – or, in the long term, our goals – and our emotions. When we cannot satisfy our needs, our emotions shift toward the negative. When we do get what we need, our emotions will be more positive.

Name that Emotion
😟😃😢😠😮😛

Children need help making sense of emotions as they happen. The sooner children can name an emotion, the better they will be able to choose an appropriate action. They will be in command of their emotions instead of at the whim of their primitive brain and its reflexive reactions.

“How do you feel?” is an important question for the first quadrant of the Circle of Wellness: Knowing Oneself. This is the most basic step to good health both physically and emotionally. If my throat feels raw and my voice is raspy, I’ll call my doctor. If I feel depressed or afraid, I’ll talk to a therapist. Knowing oneself opens the door to caring for oneself. To raise strong children it is important that we teach them to talk about how they feel – especially to talk about their emotions.

Building Better Mental Health

May is Childrens Mental Health Awareness month, and during this time we would like to remind people that physical health is fairly easy to measure, but mental health is harder to quantify.

We know what it’s like to be happy, sad, angry, or content. But how much of any emotion is too much? When does anger turn to rage? How much sorrow does it take to transform sadness into depression?

Though there are no easy answers, there is a simple way to think about mental health. Good mental health is the ability to regulate and manage your emotions in both positive and negative situations.
