When Ravana imprisoned all nine planets in order to force an auspicious alignment for the birth of his son, Shani Dev was confined to a dark cell. When Lord Hanuman set Lanka on fire and moved through the burning city, he heard Shani's cries and released him. Shani was pleased, and offered a blessing: that all devotees of Hanuman would be protected from the harsher effects of Shani's influence.

This event draws on the shared symbolism of Shani plus Hanuman as Shiva, so some of the offerings are the same for both deities, which help to ease the challenge of bearing the negative fruits of the past.

In January, Shri Anandi Ma made an offering of clothing to the Narmada River in Nikora, India by stretching a sari more than 1,200 feet across the river. Fifteen boats lined up side-by-side all the way from the Dhyanidham ashram to the other side of the river and back.

In the Ramayana, Sitaji was kidnapped by the demon king Ravana. After Ram defeated Ravana, he sent Hanumanji to Lanka to rescue Sitaji.

Hanumanji went there with his retinue and said, “Sitaji, we have come here to take you home, but before you go, tell us what punishment we should give to all these demons who were harassing you for the past year.”

And she said, “No. Forgive them.”

Why? For the superior person, it is best that when dealing with extreme negative karma or inauspicious actions, even crimes equivalent to killing, it is best to be merciful in spite of that, because there is no being that hasn’t done something wrong at one time or another.

Chanting this sacred text increases our inner strength and sense of well-being and happiness. It is said that those who chant the Chalisa receive the grace of Hanuman himself.
