Have you been told by your veterinarian to give year-round heartworm "preventatives"? What are the implications and the risks? This is a great read by holistic veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker.

This is the time of year when pet parents are most likely to hear recommendations for heartworm preventives from veterinarians and various forms of media.

So many groups advocate specific, detailed instructions on how to make your pets' food - especially when considering raw diets - leading to frustration and confusion for the pet parent.

Feeding ANY fresh food to your pet is always a better choice than the commercially made dry kibble or even some of the prepared foods available at the pet food or grocery store. Fresh food, whether it's lightly cooked or raw, will supply vital nutrients to your cat or dog's body. Synthetic vitamins added to commercial food do NOT supply the requirements, and most vitamins provided in these foods cannot be absorbed by the body.

Feeding your pets shouldn't be a hassle! It's really quite simple once you know the basics. Nature did not intend for animals to have a complicated diet. Nor should you feel that you have to be a nutritionist to provide a wholesome, nutrient-packed food for your kitties and dogs.

Excellent article for those of you who think your dog should only eat one type of protein indefinitely.

Our discussion of food transitioning begins with an assumption: You plan to transition from one commercial formula that you have fed exclusively to a new commercial formula that you will feed exclusively (until the time you want or need to transition for some reason to yet another formula that you w...

Yesterday I examined a middle-aged dog that had a lump on its right shoulder blade. Three weeks ago, the dog received Lyme and distemper combination vaccinations in that area.

The lump appeared to be more than a simple "sterile" reaction to the shots. I'm very concerned that this animal may be developing a cancerous lesion, even though it's rare to occur so quickly.

One of the "side effects" of a vaccination is a cancerous tumor. They're not common, but they do occur. So many pet parents are unaware of the dangers of over-vaccinating their animals and / or the negative effects on the immune system that can occur from repeated vaccinations.

This particular dog I'm writing about should never have another vaccine - ever. However, the state in which this dog was vaccinated requires it to have a rabies "shot" every three years, regardless of its health, and titers are not recognized.

Soon I hope to release a short mini-course on the pet vaccine issues. It's information that EVERY animal guardian should pay attention to.

A holistic veterinarian looks at the whole animal. By whole, it means the physical body, what your pet eats, what chemicals he or she is exposed to, past vaccination history, how much exercise your pet gets, how happy he or she is, the emotional wellness or lack of, and much, much more.

Most holistic doctors will spend the time that is necessary to dig deep - to really get to know your animals - and what makes them tick, and what can make them thrive, not just survive.

Our animals deserve the very best. Starting with a diet that is appropriate for the species is only one step of the journey to good health. Being aware of the "things" that are typically recommended for pest control, vaccinations that your pet may not need (and could be harmful), thinking of preventing illness by supporting the immune system instead of waiting until disease strikes, etc. - ALL are important parts to the equation.

If your regular veterinarian can't or won't take the time to explore all aspects of your animals' lives, please seek the counsel of an integrative or holistic veterinarian. The animal that provides you unconditional love deserves this. ❤️

In the wake of the recent vitamin D recalls, lawsuits for false label claims and lies about ingredients, and constant inspections of raw pet food companies (even during the government shutdown), I’ve often found myself thinking about dog food. Why do we use it? Is it really food?
