“Where there is a woman there is magic. If there is a moon falling from her mouth, she is a woman who knows her magic, who can share or not share her powers. A woman with a moon falling from her mouth, roses between her legs and tiaras of Spanish moss, this woman is a consort of the spirits.”
― Ntozake Shange, Sassafrass, Cypress & Indigo
This collage was born from those words.
From the Southern hush of Spanish moss tangled like tiaras in her hair.
From the rose between her thighs, the secret garden, the opening, the power.
From the sub rosa mysteries we carry not on our tongues, but in our blood.
“Sub rosa” means “under the rose.”
In ancient times, a rose was carved above council doors where secret rites or forbidden truths were spoken. It was a promise: what was said beneath the rose stayed hidden, sacred, protected.
The feminine has always been a language of hidden things:
— The body as temple
— The heart as cipher
— The womb as cauldron
— The art as invocation
This piece is not meant to explain.
It is meant to stir.
To awaken.
To bring you back to the part of you that blooms behind closed eyes.
Where there is a woman, there is magic.
And where there is a rose, there is a secret worth keeping.
