Sympathetic: the fight or flight system that reacts to rage, danger, fear or exercise. It raises heart rate, increases sweat and raises blood pressure. Adrenal glands and sweat glands can go into overdrive if remained in this state for too long, it can have damaging effects on your immune system and can lead to stress related illness.
Parasympathetic: allows you to relax, unwind, and conserve your energy. It relaxes your body. It can slow down your heart rate, decrease your blood pressure, promote your energy storage. Massage therapy and bodywork can help to engage the Parasympathetic Division, which is the balancing side of your nervous system, the one that calms the body. Regular massage therapy enables your body to restore balance and to facilitate healing. It can help you sleep better, increase concentration levels, improve your mental alertness, mood and can ease your anxiety. Massage provides you with that amazing relaxing sensation which has benefits well beyond the treatment room. The body is resilient but it is not built to cope with too much stress for too long.
