Are Ultra-Processed Foods Messing with Your Blood Sugar?

It’s not just about sweets. That “healthy” snack bar or packaged meal might be loaded with hidden sugars, sodium, and preservatives that spike your blood sugar and keep you craving more.

Your body deserves better fuel.
Start small—ditch one processed snack a day and swap it for something whole and nourishing.

Grateful Hearts, Healthy Starts

I know you’re in the kitchen and I won’t hold you long but I wanted pause to reflect on the many things we’re thankful for—family, friends, and the opportunity to support healthier lives in our community.

For those navigating diabetes or managing their health, the holidays can be challenging. But remember, every step you take toward balance and wellness is something to celebrate.

Enjoy your traditions, savor the moments, and give yourself grace. This season is about gratitude and love, not perfection.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at The Sugar Nurse! May your day be filled with joy, warmth, and good health.

Prediabetes often shows no symptoms, but darkening of skin on the neck, armpits, or groin can be a sign. If you’re experiencing increased thirst, hunger, frequent urination, fatigue, blurred vision, or tingling in your hands or feet, it might indicate progression to type 2 diabetes.
If you haven’t seen your healthcare provider in over a year, now is the time to make it happen and if you’re not sure of your next steps….that’s why we are here! DM us for information about our education and support series!

🥔🧡 Sweet Potatoes: A Diabetes-Friendly Twist for Your Holiday Table! 🧡🥔

Are you wondering how to enjoy the deliciousness of sweet potatoes without compromising your blood sugar levels? Look no further! 🙌🏼

🔸 Sweet potatoes are already naturally sweet, so adding additional sugar may not be necessary. Instead, let's explore some "healthy" ways to prepare this holiday table staple, while keeping it diabetes-friendly! Here are a few ideas:

1️⃣ Roasted Sweet Potatoes: Cut your sweet potatoes into bite-sized cubes, toss them with a little olive oil, and season with herbs like rosemary or thyme. Roast in the oven until they're crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. This method brings out the natural sweetness while keeping added fats and sugars to a minimum.

2️⃣ Mashed Sweet Potatoes: Boil your sweet potatoes until fork-tender, then drain and mash them. To add flavor without the need for excess sugar, try adding a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg. You could also mix in some unsweetened almond milk or a small amount of low-fat Greek yogurt for a creamy texture.

3️⃣ Sweet Potato Casserole: Opt for a healthier twist on the traditional sweet potato casserole. Instead of marshmallows and brown sugar, top your mashed sweet potatoes with a sprinkle of chopped nuts, such as pecans or almonds. This adds a delightful crunch and healthy fats without the extra sugar.

Remember, portion control is key! Moderation is important, especially when managing diabetes. Enjoy your sweet potatoes as part of a balanced meal alongside lean proteins and non-starchy vegetables to help keep your blood sugar levels stable.

Hey Sugar Nurse followers! 💙
Today, let's talk about the importance of diabetes education.
Did you know that education plays a crucial role in managing diabetes effectively?

Diabetes education empowers individuals with the knowledge and skills to take control of their health. By understanding the condition better, we can make informed decisions and live a healthier, happier life.

Education helps us learn about the different types of diabetes, signs, and symptoms, and how to monitor blood sugar levels. It teaches us the importance of balanced nutrition (I hate the word diet), physical activity (I also hate exercise), and medication management.
By staying educated, we can prevent complications and promote overall well-being.
The best part, you don’t have to do it alone! That’s what your team at The Sugar Nurse is for! We are here to educate, strategize, support, and guide you on your healthcare journey.

Some medications like the ones we take for our mood or over the counter cough syrups, can affect blood sugar. Whenever you’re given a prescription, remind your provider AND the pharmacist that you have to help prevent complications caused by medication interactions.
