Early recognition is key to preventing school violence, but not all warning signs look the same.

As Aysha Lonich, AT-RISK Senior Threat Assessment Specialist, explains, affective violence often arises when a student struggles with communication, emotional regulation, or situational stressors such as hunger, fatigue, or frustration. Targeted violence is more deliberate. Indicators may include fixations on prior school shootings, emulating past attackers, or leakage of intent through conversations, drawings, or online activity.

Understanding these behavioral differences empowers school teams to respond appropriately and connect students with the right supports before escalation occurs.

Every successful protection operation has an unsung hero: the Executive Assistant.

They know the principal’s habits, stressors, and blind spots better than anyone, and they’re the bridge between the schedule and the reality on the ground.

As Director of Operations Nicole Malarney reminds us, protection is a team sport, and the EA is often your most valuable player.

In the school environment, not all acts of violence stem from the same place. Understanding the difference is crucial for prevention and knowing how best to respond. According to Aysha Lonich, AT-RISK Senior Threat Assessment Specialist, distinguishing between affective (reactive) and targeted violence helps School-Based Threat Assessment Teams, counselors, and educators respond effectively.

Affective violence is impulsive, often triggered by frustration or unmet needs in the moment. Targeted violence is planned and purposeful, developing over time from grievances or feelings of injustice. Recognizing which type you’re observing can guide the right interventions to keep students and staff safe.

In our next post, Aysha shares specific behavioral indicators and early warning signs of both affective and targeted violence and how these may look in the school setting.

Introducing our new series, From U.S. Secret Service to Private Sector, featuring Nicole Malarney and Krystin Barnett. From federal service to private security, two of our team members share what it takes to serve at the highest level, and how those lessons shape how we protect people and assets today.

Nicole served in the Uniformed Division and then as a special agent for the United States Secret Service before bringing that mission-driven expertise to the private sector, applying elite planning, threat management, and protection standards in client-focused environments.

Krystin spent a decade with the U.S. Secret Service — the first two years in the Uniformed Division before transitioning to a Special Agent role. She now applies her federal-grade expertise to help organizations address unique risks, protect key personnel, and stay ahead of evolving threats.

AT-RISK International believes protection isn’t just reaction, it’s anticipation. With our global threat intelligence, investigation, consulting, training, and protective services, we translate this level of experience into custom-designed programs that meet the needs of high-stakes environments.

Want to elevate your protective posture? Follow us for ongoing insights from Nicole and Krystin, and discover how expertise born in federal service becomes value in private sector protection.
