🌱 Nightshades: Why Blanket “Avoid” Advice is Misleading 🌱

Tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and potatoes—often lumped together as “nightshades”—have been unfairly demonized. You’ve probably seen articles or heard “experts” say they:

❌ Cause inflammation
❌ Trigger arthritis pain
❌ Should be avoided to “heal” your gut

👉 Here’s the problem: Making general recommendations to avoid nightshades is irresponsible.

âś… Nightshades are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols that support health and lower inflammation for most people.
âś… There is no scientific evidence showing these foods are harmful to the general population.
âś… For most, cutting nightshades means eliminating nutrient-dense, protective foods for no reason.

⚠️ When avoidance does make sense:
Only in specific, medically sound cases, such as a diagnosed allergy, confirmed autoimmune-trigger reactions under medical supervision, or kidney disease requiring potassium restriction.

🚩 Red flag: If someone tells you to avoid nightshades without a medically sound reason, that’s a sign you might be working with a rookie. True nutrition experts understand the difference between individualized recommendations and fear-based, generalized advice.

đź’ˇ Bottom line: Unless you have a personal, evidence-based reason to avoid them, nightshades are not the enemy. Eliminating them because of generalized claims means losing out on powerful, health-promoting foods.

❓Would you eat this for breakfast? What makes it a fat-burning meal?

👉 The answer: the right combination and portion size.

One of the biggest challenges people face when trying to lose body fat and create better health is a lack of nutrition education. Even if weight loss isn’t your goal, I hope you’re aiming to create health.

What I teach my clients is how to eat in a way that optimizes both glucose (blood sugar) and insulin (hormone) response to the foods they eat. When you do this, you naturally reduce cravings, increase fat-burning, and decrease fat storage.
