The Granny Nannies Story

Granny NANNIES was founded in 1990 by Rob and Kirsten Hodgson in Central Florida as the result of a very personal, family situation - the need to find quality, trustworthy, reliable and affordable senior home care for Rob's aging grandmother, Esther Dowding, in her own Winter Park home. The plight was similar to others across the country: an elderly parent with working adult children, who are parents themselves; a great-grandparent with a zest for life and a disabling physical condition; a senior with an undeniable need for homecare assistance doing everyday activities, yet with a determined desire to stay in their own home; or loved ones to whom a nursing home is "out of the question." Rob and Kirsten Hodgson moved to Florida from New Hampshire to care for Esther. With their own life to manage, Rob and Kirsten knew they needed help in caring for Esther and began a search to find competent, caring, affordable assistance. Their search turned up very little. In fact, there was a relative void in Central Florida for the type of home care services they sought. Clearly, a resource was needed. Being "go-getters," Rob and Kirsten solved the problem for themselves and hundreds of other families by establishing Granny NANNIES of North America to offer specialized private duty home care services for the elderly. And the rest is history! Since our beginnings in 1990, Granny NANNIES' commitment to excellence remains true today. A strong dedication remains to ensure that our clients are consistently treated with the highest level of respect and dignity and are matched with the right private duty caregiver to provide care services in the home, hospital, assisted living facility, or nursing home. Esther, who lived to the age of 104, credited her longevity and well-being to Granny NANNIES. "She's the reason we started it all!" Says her grandson Rob, giving credit where credit is due.

In the realm of healthcare, continuity of care stands as a cornerstone of effective treatment and patient satisfaction. At Granny NANNIES, we’ve consistently heard from clients about the invaluable benefits of having a regular caregiver. Beyond just providing comfort and familiarity, continuity of care plays a crucial role in early problem recognition and optimal chronic disease management.

Recognizing Small Problems Before They Become Big Issues
One of the most significant advantages of continuity of care is the ability to detect subtle changes in a patient’s health or behavior early on. Unlike sporadic visits from different caregivers, a consistent caregiver develops a deep understanding of their patient’s baseline health. This familiarity allows them to notice deviations that might indicate the onset of a health issue. For instance, a caregiver who notices slight changes in an elderly patient’s energy levels or appetite can prompt earlier intervention, potentially preventing more serious complications down the road.
Optimizing Chronic Disease Management
For individuals managing chronic conditions, continuity of care is particularly beneficial. Patients with conditions like diabetes or hypertension often require ongoing monitoring and adjustment of treatment plans. A regular caregiver who understands the nuances of a patient’s condition and history can make more informed decisions about their care. This includes recognizing trends in health metrics, adhering to prescribed medications, and providing timely lifestyle advice—all of which contribute to better disease management outcomes.
Building Trust and Confidence
Beyond the clinical benefits, continuity of care fosters a trusting relationship between caregivers and patients. Over time, patients develop confidence in their caregiver’s ability to provide personalized care that considers their unique needs and preferences. This trust is crucial in encouraging patients to communicate openly about their health concerns, leading to more effective care delivery and improved patient satisfaction.

Is my forgetfulness normal?
What's normal when it comes to being forgetful What’s considered normal when it comes to forgetfulness? Truth time: Have you gone to the pantry and forgotten what you were looking for? Do you struggle with remembering your new neighbors’ names? After you talk to someone about Alzheimer’s, do you privately wonder if you are heading down that slippery slope? There’s something about talking about Alzheimer’s that makes us question our own memory capabilities and how sharp we still are. The good news is that forgetfulness is a normal part of aging, and whether we like it or not, we are all getting older each day. The key is determining the difference between mild forgetfulness and a serious memory problem that may indicate Alzheimer’s. Here’s some help distinguishing the two paths, with help from the National Institute on Aging:

Normal brain aging means occasional poor decision making; missing a monthly bill payment; struggling to find the right word; misplacing or losing things once in a while.

Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease are: Frequently making poor decisions and judgments; problems managing monthly bill payments; losing awareness of the day, month, year, time of day; difficulty conversing; often misplacing objects and not being able to find them.

The essential lesson here is this: If you have concerns about your memory slipping or changing, talk to your primary health care provider.
