The Vibralung is really the next generation in airway clearance therapy.
Airway clearance started with CPT (Chest PhysioTherapy) or cupping, that is beating with a cupped hand or instrument over the lungs. Postural drainage was used as well; using gravity to move mucus out of the lungs. Pursed lip breathing, humming, harmonica playing have also been used.
Next came thumping devices like the G5 Flimm Fighter. There were also the OPEP devices, the pickle or Flutter, Acapella, and more recently the Aerobika.
Along came the air powered vests, such as Hill-Rom's The Vest. The Minnesota protocol was developed as the best way to use the Vest. After that the mobile vests came out, Afflow, InCourage, & Smart Vest. Then Hill-Rom came out with the Monarch vest, which has oscillating pods (perhaps speakers).
The Frequencer, a large transducer/speaker, applied sound waves to the chest wall.
For any external device applying thumping or sound, the chest wall acts as a low pass filter. Those devices do generate frequencies, but not all of them reach the mucus to get it to vibrate.
As the next generation of airway clearance therapy, the Vibralung generates sound and through the mouthpiece, delivers it directly into the lungs. This is much more effective. Our clinical trial showed equivalence to the Hill-Rom Vest. In this cross over trial, the Vibralung was not used by itself, but used with the Vest. The conclusion is the Vibralung is safe, gentle and highly effective!
