🎆 Staying sober on July 4th starts with a plan.
For individuals in recovery, holidays can bring a unique set of challenges: parties centered around alcohol, emotional triggers, and pressure to "just have one." But with preparation and support, you can protect your progress and enjoy the holiday on your terms.
🧠 BEFORE THE HOLIDAY: PLAN AHEAD
✔️ Know your triggers – Whether it’s a specific person, place, or feeling, being aware helps you stay in control.
✔️ Make a plan (and a backup) – Decide ahead of time where you’ll go, who you’ll be with, and how you’ll leave if needed. Always have your own transportation.
✔️ Bring your own drinks – Pack your favorite non-alcoholic beverages to avoid temptation and awkward moments.
✔️ Attend a meeting – Start the day grounded and supported by joining a recovery group (AA, NA, SMART Recovery)—many offer special holiday sessions. Visit aayaig.org/meetings to find your next meeting!
👥 DURING THE DAY: STAY CONNECTED
Stay rooted in your support system.
✔️ Stick with sober friends or attend a sober-friendly gathering.
✔️ Keep in touch with a sponsor or recovery buddy and check in regularly.
✔️ Leave if the environment becomes uncomfortable—your health comes first.
✔️ Use grounding techniques or coping tools (like a coin, bracelet, or breathing exercise) to calm anxiety and reinforce your commitment.
✔️ Stay busy—help out with food, games, or setup to keep your mind active and engaged.
🌙 AFTER THE DAY: REFLECT & RECHARGE
Your effort deserves to be honored.
✔️ Talk with someone in your support circle about how the day went—celebrate what worked and learn from what didn’t.
✔️ Reward yourself with something positive and meaningful.
✔️ Journal your experience to solidify your growth and remind yourself of how far you've come.
💬 Recovery is a daily choice—and you don’t have to make it alone. Let this July 4th be a celebration of freedom and your continued strength.
