πŸŽ„β„οΈDon't let holiday mastitis ruin the season! β„οΈπŸŽ„

Why it happens - The simple answer is: going too long between feedings. It's more common during the holidays due to all the extra things happening between traveling, family gatherings, decorating, cooking, and more!

How to prevent it - Talk with your husband about your concerns before any events, plan to delegate tasks and nurse, nurse, nurse your baby!

Watch out for - Early warning signs like breast swelling or pain that doesn't go away after a feeding. Look for any red, tender or painful area(s) on your breast that is hot to the touch or red streaking.

What to do - Contact your midwife or lactation support, stay hydrated and get rest. Keep breastfeeding, starting with the affected side. If it is too painful start on the other side and then switch after letdown.

✨ Just one more perk of homebirth is that you get to arrange your space in a way that feels comfortable, relaxing and right to YOU, which includes the lighting!

We will work with the lighting you choose, flashlights and headlamps are our friends! That might be the natural light from the window, a few soft lamps and flameless candles, twinkle lights, or your regular room's lighting.

From a midwifery standpoint on physiological birth we know that we need a feeling of safety and security for birth to unfold. The harsh overhead hospital lighting (even just in the waiting room) is not ideal for that and often causes labor to pause.

And of course.... ✨ twinkle lights ✨are just beautiful and fun! Do you think we will have any babies born by the light of the Christmas tree this year? πŸ€©πŸŽ„βœ¨

The world often tells us that pregnancy and birth must be chaotic, stressful, or rushed. But Advent invites us to seek the deep, abiding peace that comes from trusting in God's plan.

True labor often requires a quiet, undisturbed space. Let’s practice cultivating that peaceful stillness now, so we can carry it into our labor and our postpartum journey. πŸ’œ May you find moments of stillness and peace this week as we continue to wait in joyful expectation.

Birth isn't a race. There is such beauty in allowing your baby's transition from the womb to the world to be slow and peaceful. ✨

No rush, no interruptions, just the gentle embrace of home. This is birth centered entirely on what matters most: your connection, comfort, care, and family.

This approach honors the dignity of mother and newborn, making the first moments together intimate, calm, and gentle ones.

If you've ever wondered if this kind of birth is possible for you, let's talk!

Winter pregnancies can come with some extra joys like being pregnancy during the holidays with all the beauty of the season πŸ₯Ή, but can also come with a number of extra challenges. Make sure you're taking care of yourself well as the colder weather begins to arrive in KC.

❄️ Prevent any slips or falls by making sure you have comfortable footwear and always watch for any icy spots.
❄️ Stay hydrated and moisturize - We usually think about hydration during the summer months, but it's equally important at this time of year. Herbal tea or soup broth can also be a cozy way to increase your fluid intake if you're having a hard time drinking enough water. Dry skin can increase itching on stretching skin so make sure to find a gentle moisturizer that works for your skin type and you can even consider a humidifier for your home if the indoor air is feeling dry.
❄️ Washing your hands is one of the easiest ways to stay healthy, especially when out and about or visiting with friends and family over the holidays.
❄️ Dress for comfort. Layers are the perfect thing for moving between indoors and outdoors during this time of year.

What's your favorite thing about being pregnant during the Winter?

πŸ’™ Is it any surprise that when women are left alone to birth the way they choose, they do what is most natural and aligns with what is already so perfectly designed? We don't think so! πŸ’š

Researchers believe that giving birth in an upright position is beneficial for several physiologic reasons. Physiologic refers to your body’s normal function.

⬆️ In an upright birthing position:
- Gravity can help bring the baby down and out
- There is less risk of compressing your aorta (the large blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood from your heart to the rest of your body):
- More blood flow through the aorta leads to a better oxygen supply to the baby
- Which leads to lowered risk of abnormal fetal heart tones
- Which leads to a lower risk of emergency Cesarean
- The uterus can contract more strongly and efficiently
- The fetus can get in a better position to pass through the pelvis
- It’s less painful than lying on your back!

"However, despite these benefits of giving birth in an upright position, most people who give birth vaginally in U.S. hospitals describe pushing and delivering lying on their backs (68%) or in a semi-sitting/lying position with the head of the bed raised up (23%). A small portion of birthing people push and give birth in other positions such as side-lying (3%), squatting or sitting (4%), or hands-and-knees position (1%) (Declercq et al., 2014).

In contrast, research from home birth settings confirms that when birthing people are free to choose the position of their choice, they do not usually choose to lay on their backs or semi-sitting in bed. In Europe, a study of nearly 3,000 people who had planned home births between 2008 and 2013 found that the majority (65%) gave birth in upright or side-lying positions (Edqvist et al., 2016)." - Evidence Based Birth

Not receiving care that aligns with your values? It's okay to make a change! In fact your birth experience and satisfaction may depend on it. If your provider is showing red flags now, they're not likely to change when it comes to supporting you during birth.

We intentionally keep the number of births we attend low each month in order to provide personalized and attentive care to each of our patients, if you're interested in transferring (even late in your pregnancy) give us a call today! πŸ“ž

Continuous support throughout labor can be... .. chatting and even telling jokes and laughing together throughout early labor.. joyous prayer and singing or music.. an encouraging word between the contractions of active labor.. making sure you're not disturbed when you're focusing.. encouraging you to hydrate .. breathing together through transition .. a strong, steady, quiet handhold

No matter the stage of labor and what mom needs at the time, continuous support means personalized care, attention and respect. It's not, watching the clock, but instead respecting the time labor takes, and reminding you that you know how to birth your baby.

Your labor team should feel like a bubble around you while you're in labor, creating a space away from everything else where you're safe, secure and can do the beautiful work of labor without worry.
