Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is actually somewhat common — it’s estimated that one in six people have IBS, and women are twice more likely to develop it than men. So it's no surprise that IBS is the top gastrointestinal condition diagnosed by doctors, and even accounts for 30% of all referrals to gastroenterologists. IBS symptoms can vary widely from person to person; some people are highly symptomatic, while others have few symptoms at all. But generally, symptoms include: vague chronic abdominal pain, irregular bowel habits (constipation/diarrhea), heartburn, nausea and bloating.
