Did you know that summer heat can increase the dehydration risks for seniors? As we age, a person's thirst and appetite may decline. This makes it harder to recognize when more fluids are needed. The best thing to do is stay proactive when it comes to fluid intake. If you have trouble drinking fluids, try including water-rich foods with every meal. These include cucumbers, watermelon, lettuce, strawberries, tomatoes, and celery. If you’re looking for additional tips on how to stay hydrated, ask your healthcare provider. Getting enough water each day is an easy yet vital way to stay healthy and active as an older adult.

💧 💧 June 23 is National Hydration Day — a timely reminder that staying hydrated isn’t just for athletes. It’s especially crucial for older adults, who may not always feel thirsty even when their bodies need water.

Dehydration in seniors can lead to confusion, UTIs, falls, and other serious health issues. Encourage your loved ones to sip water throughout the day, especially during warmer months. Let’s raise a glass (of water!) to better health.

Brandy Randolph - Senior Care Advisor

Brandy Randolph knows how stressful it can be to search for the right care facility for a senior in crisis. When her father-in-law Bob was released from the hospital into a rehab facility, the family was given a list of facilities and sent on their way. The more places they visited the more confused they got.

“It was hard to keep the details of each facility straight,” Brandy says. “We needed someone to take us by the hand and show us which places would fit Bob’s needs. There was no one who knew all about Bob and all about the facilities.”

Brandy studied Psychology and Gerontology in college and always knew she wanted to work in some aspect of the Gerontology field. But it wasn’t until she’d gone through this personal experience that she knew what she wanted to do.

She decided to become a Senior Care Authority Advisor to help other families avoid what she and her family went through.
