Back-to-School is coming up quick, making it the perfect time to set up an educational in-service with an HOC nurse for your child. Our nurses can meet with your childโ€™s teacher and school staff, including daycare providers, provide in-services for campus nurses if your student is heading off to college, and lead fun, interactive classroom sessions to help their peers better understand bleeding disorders.

Contact Heather today at heatherh@hocgb.org or 920-965-0606 to help set it up.

Welcome to Beyond the Bleeds, where real stories and heart meet medical insight.

Weโ€™re thrilled to bring you the highlights from our most recent episode, where we sat down with Dr. Matthew Ryan, Medical Director at the Hemophilia Outreach Center, and Dr. David Groteluschen from Green Bay Oncology. This conversation truly showcases what can happen when dedicated teams come together for people living with bleeding disorders.

Dr. Ryan shared how his partnership with HOC began 15 years ago and how itโ€™s grown into a seamless collaboration between Green Bay Oncology and HOC. Dr. Groteluschen described how this partnership is about providing the same level of care that patients might receive at top universities, right here in our own communities.

We discussed the importance of accessโ€”how patients from rural areas who would otherwise go without specialized care are finding their way to HOC and Green Bay Oncology, sometimes traveling from six or seven hours away. Telemedicine and shared expertise are helping us bridge those geographic gaps.

We firmly believe that every person with a bleeding disorder deserves the full spectrum of care: medical, financial, genetic, and psychosocial support. HOC is uniquely designed to provide this comprehensive approach, and thereโ€™s just no substitute for being part of a center focused solely on bleeding disorders.

We reflected on how crucial it is to reach people as early as possible. The sooner someone connects with us, the better long-term outcomes can be, preventing complications like joint damage. Our menorrhagia clinic is opening doors for women who might otherwise overlook their symptoms, demonstrating that what's considered โ€œnormalโ€ for one family may actually be a treatable condition.

Hearing Dr. Ryan and Dr. Groteluschen discuss gene therapy was both inspiring and humbling. Itโ€™s not a magic bullet yet, but itโ€™s dramatically improving livesโ€”and weโ€™re excited to see where the research takes us in the next few years.

Our chat was a reminder that none of us does this alone. Every patient benefits from a whole team: doctors, nurses, social workers, genetic counselors, financial navigators, and, most importantly, their families and communities.

Welcome to Beyond the Bleeds, where real stories and heart meet medical insight.

Today, we had the privilege of sitting down with Dr. Matthew Ryan and Dr. David Groteluschen from Green Bay Oncology for a discussion about the power of partnerships in hematology and oncology care. Their expertise and candor shed light on how collaborative, patient-centered approaches transform lives for those affected by bleeding disorders.

Dr. Groteluschen highlighted how teaming up with specialized hemophilia treatment centers raises the standard of care for patients. This type of partnership enables the delivery of comprehensive, up-to-date treatment locally, on par with that of major university hospitals.

Dr. Ryan emphasized that early diagnosis and proactive care for bleeding disorders can prevent chronic complications like joint damage. Increasing awareness among both providers and the community is critical so patients can be identified and supported as early as possible.

With advances like gene therapy and longer life spans for those with hemophilia, care teams now face the unique challenge of managing both bleeding and clotting risks, particularly as patients age. It takes a skilled and well-coordinated group to achieve the best outcomes.

The dedication of both the Green Bay Oncology and Hemophilia Outreach Center teams, along with their commitment to bringing expertise and compassionate care closer to home, truly makes a difference.

What is the Hemophilia Outreach Center?

The Hemophilia Outreach Center, located in Green Bay, WI currently serves patients from North Eastern Wisconsin to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The Center was founded by two pediatric nurses, Peggy Maier and Audrey Nuskiewicz, in 1974 after being recruited to establish a โ€œclinicโ€ for persons with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders.

After decades of commitment and care from these two nurses, they decided to make their dream a reality by creating a center that is governed by the patients and families it serves. The Hemophilia Outreach Center is one of the few free-standing Hemophilia Treatment Centers in the nation and has grown from the original six patients to currently serving over 350 patients.

Since the beginning, it has been our mission to provide expert, specialized medical care and advocacy for persons with a bleeding disorder. We create and implement programs that educate, empower, and enrich the bleeding disorder community. Our services are designed to enhance our holistic vision of each person.

The Hemophilia Outreach Centerโ€™s services include: diagnosis and treatment from a comprehensive care team including physicians, nurses, physical therapist, social worker, reimbursement specialist, and other healthcare professionals; coordination of medical care with other healthcare providers and hospitals; 24-hour on-call coverage 7 days a week provided by medical personnel; education and outreach about bleeding disorders to patients, their families, schools, hospitals, and the community; delivery of hemophilia clotting factor at reduced prices through our Public Health Service 340B Clotting Factor Program.
