Today is National Christmas Tree Day!
This recent weather means it's probably a good time for a refresher on keeping your evergreens safe from snow load, salt spray, and winter burn.

‘Tis the season when evergreens steal the spotlight - glowing with lights, holding down the yard, standing tall through every icy whisper of December. But even the toughest trees feel winter’s weight.

A few simple steps can keep them healthy and vibrant long after the ornaments come down:

Snow Load:
Gently brush heavy snow upward off branches - never downward, which can snap limbs. Avoid using shovels or anything stiff that could damage needles.

Salt Spray:
If your trees sit near driveways or streets, rinse them off on warmer days and consider a burlap wrap or barrier to keep salty slush from burning needles.

Winter Burn:
Dry winter winds pull moisture from foliage. Mulch the base to help retain soil moisture, and water during mild spells when the ground isn’t frozen.

Healthy evergreens don’t just survive winter - they stay beautiful all year long.

Here’s to keeping your outdoor “Christmas trees” merry, bright, and thriving.

Looking Ahead: Your Winter Lawn & Tree Watchlist

As November wraps up, your lawn may look quiet - but winter is when the real test begins.

A few small things to keep an eye on over the next couple of months can make a big difference once spring rolls around:

- Watch the salt. Ice melt along sidewalks and driveways can burn turf. Try to keep products off the grass when you can.
- Mind the snow piles. Repeatedly dumping snow in the same spot can compact soil and smother the lawn underneath.
- Check where you park. Avoid driving or parking on frozen turf - it can crush crowns and leave bare ruts later.
- Glance up after storms. Heavy snow or ice on branches can reveal cracks or broken limbs that need attention.

You don’t have to babysit your yard all winter - just give it a quick check after big weather days and make note of any trouble spots.

And if you’d like a fresh start lined up for spring, now’s a great time to get on the schedule for a 2026 lawn or tree health plan.

While we’re recovering from leftovers, your lawn’s recovering from fall stress.

The freeze-thaw cycle can be tough on roots - but keeping the soil healthy, hydrated, and nutrient-rich helps protect your grass through winter dormancy.
If you haven’t scheduled your late-fall soil treatment, now’s your last call before the ground locks up.

Your lawn deserves a little post-feast care, too. Give us a shout!

The Ice-Storm Checklist Your Trees Wish You Knew

Kansas City winters love a good surprise — especially the kind that shows up as overnight ice.
Before we get our first slick morning, now’s the time to give your trees the once-over they need.

Here’s what to check before winter weather weighs everything down:
- Look for V-shaped branch unions — these narrow forks split the fastest under ice.
- Scan for deadwood — weak limbs snap first and fall the farthest.
- Check for rubbing branches — friction weakens bark heading into winter.
- Notice soil movement around the base — shifting roots = stability issues.
- Confirm canopy balance — uneven weight leads to storm breakage.

KC trees carry a lot each winter — freeze, thaw, wind, and sudden ice loads.
A quick inspection now can prevent a costly cleanup later.

Our certified arborists can help prep your trees before winter storms hit.

Freeze Warning: Protect Your Lawn Before the Cold Hits...
Kansas City loves to throw curveballs - warm afternoons one day, a hard freeze the next. And while we can layer up, your lawn doesn’t get that luxury.

A sudden cold snap can stress your grass, roots, and young trees, but a few quick steps now can keep everything protected and ready for winter:
- Give your lawn one last deep drink if the soil is dry. Hydrated roots handle freezing temps far better than thirsty ones.
- Clear leaves from the lawn and beds. When frost hits a thick leaf layer, it traps moisture against the grass and can lead to fungus or winter damage.
- Skip walking on frosty grass. Frozen blades can crack under foot traffic — and once they’re damaged, they stay damaged until spring.
- Check small trees and shrubs. Fall drought is sneaky, and young roots need moisture before everything locks up.
- Secure outdoor décor and loose branches. KC winds love to test your porch displays and low-hanging limbs.

A little prep now goes a long way toward a smoother winter - and a greener comeback next spring. Questions? Give us a shout or drop us a note.

National Recycling Week: Nature’s Been Doing It Right All Along

Leaves fall. Grass clippings break down. Trees shed and renew.
Mother Nature’s been recycling long before it had a hashtag.

At Martz Bros, we follow her lead - reusing, repurposing, and responsibly handling every branch, bag, and blade we collect.

From mulching and composting organic material to protecting the soil beneath it, we believe in giving back to the same ground that gives us so much.

Because taking care of Kansas City starts right here - in our own backyards.

Today, we pause to honor the men and women who have served - those who stood tall to protect the land we’re proud to call home.

At Martz Bros, we understand that strong roots matter - in our lawns, our trees, but especially in our communities.
And none of it stands without the dedication and sacrifice of our Veterans.

From our family to yours - thank you for your service, your courage, and your example.

We are grateful today and every day.

Root Protection Season: Strength Starts Underground

As temps drop, your trees shift their energy below the surface - building reserves for winter and setting the stage for spring growth.

Now’s the time to give them a boost.

- Deep-root feeding helps trees store essential nutrients all winter long.
- Soil conditioning improves oxygen and water flow.
- Preventative care strengthens root systems against freeze stress.

Healthy trees don’t happen by accident - they’re protected long before the first frost.

Ask about our fall root treatments and keep your landscape thriving year after year.

Healthy Trees Start with Smart Care - Not Just a Trim

As leaves fall and your trees head into dormancy, it’s easy to think the hard work is done. But late fall is one of the most important windows for keeping your trees healthy - inside and out.

Now’s the time to strengthen, not just shape.
A light round of selective pruning can help remove dead or damaged limbs, but what really matters this time of year is what’s happening beneath the bark.

- Root feeding gives your trees the nutrients they need to store energy through winter.
- Fungal and pest prevention helps stop spring outbreaks before they start
- Structural care reduces stress before snow and ice arrive.

Every tree is different - and so is every treatment plan.
Our certified arborists can evaluate your trees now to build a care plan that keeps them healthy all winter long (and thriving when spring hits).

Schedule a late fall tree health check with the Martz Bros Tree Doctor team today.
