Choosing a health care proxy is one of the most important things you can do, regardless of your age. It's important to know that someone knows your wishes and will advocate for you when you can't advocate for yourself.

You've probably heard that hospice is only for the last six months of life. We hear this all the time, and it can cause a lot of unnecessary worry.

Here's what's actually true: Six months is a guideline for when someone might be eligible for hospice, but it's not a hard deadline. If someone lives longer than six months and still qualifies for hospice care, they don't get "kicked off." We can recertify them, and care just continues.

It happens more often than you'd think. We've supported patients for well over a year—some for more than three years. Everyone's journey is different, and our team knows how to make sure you or your loved one gets the care they deserve for as long as they need it.

Seeking Volunteer Curator

On the evening of April 17th, at the Hangar Theatre, Hospicare is partnering with Kathy Lucas Movement Arts to host ‘Moving Grief’ – a movement performance created and performed by community members exploring their relationship with grief and loss. To accompany this performance there will be a ‘Museum of Ordinary Things’ exhibit featuring meaningful objects selected by members of the wider Hospicare community.

The curator would have an artistic/design eye and will help to put together this ‘Museum of Ordinary Things’ that will be presented alongside the performance at the Hangar that evening.

Responsibilities:

➡️Meet with the team bi-weekly for ½ hr., to help ideate this coordinated effort
➡️Discuss the idea at length with the Manager of Psychosocial Services
➡️Stage the museum on April 17th for the performance.

If you’re interested or have questions, please contact Emily Hopkins at ehopkins@hospicare.org.

“Palliative care and hospice are the same thing.”

This trips a lot of people up, because hospice is a type of palliative care and some people use the words interchangeably. But they’re not the same.

Palliative care is extra support for people living with a serious illness. It focuses on comfort, symptoms, and quality of life, and is usually provided alongside treatments like chemo, radiation, or other curative care.

Hospice care is for people who have decided to stop curative treatment and focus on comfort, dignity, and making the most of the time they have.

Both focus on comfort and quality of life—but they’re used at different points in a person’s illness.

Thank you, Protagonist Books & Coffee, for helping families have hard conversations.

This is a fantastic book, and if you're looking to pick up a copy of your own, this is a great place to do so. (We recommend picking up a cookie or two while you're there, too!)

Our Story

Our goal is to help people in Tompkins and Cortland Counties live their final months as fully and peacefully as possible. High quality healthcare is important at every stage of life and we consider it a privilege to walk alongside those who are facing terminal illness, coping with grief, or seeking to learn more about these profound experiences. Hospicare & Palliative Care Services, a community resource since 1983, provides hospice care for people of any age with any terminal diagnosis. Additionally, our palliative care service specializes in relief of pain, symptoms, and stress at any point in an illness. Hospicare is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization. While we receive reimbursement for services from Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance that does not fully cover the cost of caring for our community. Your tax deductible donations to support our work are greatly appreciated. www.hospicare.org/donate
