Why do we tell our kids that our horses are 'having a pedicure' or 'having his toenails cut just like you!' when hoof maintenance is one of the more important parts of our horse's healthcare?

We shouldn't trivialize something so important. This doesn't set our kids up to have an interest or understanding in this aspect of their future horse's care and it doesn't set our horses up for good health care when those kids are older and making decisions about their horse's care.

Our horse's health care begins with OUR thoughts, knowledge and understanding. And that starts with what we're taught by those who go before us.

What were you told taught way back when that could've been taught to you better?

Standing around is the new sugar.

That's an expression I'd like to be able to coin when it comes to horse health.

Except I can't .... because the sugar thing isn't yet fixed and it's still the biggest killer of horses.

But standing around is a close second.

And the combo of the two?... whoa, now there's a recipe for disaster.

Horses are moving creatures. Humans are too.

Have you seen what happens to people who just sit and sit and sit day in and day out?

They're not healthy.

Curious....on a scale of 1 to 10, how important do you think movement is to your horse's health-both physically and mentally?

What's possible for you and your horse??

Do you ever ask yourself that??

Or are you too caught up in what's not working, what's getting worse, why you can't move forward and what's been IMpossible in the past?

I talk to people regularly who are close to giving up. People who are ready to throw in the towel. People who've had the wind sucked out of their horse sail like the biggest sailing ship on a calm and windless day.

I get it. I'm not blaming.
You're human and as humans we see the world through our own unique glasses with lenses created just for us by the experiences we've lived since we first got here.

But listen. I'm here to tell you. It doesn't have to be that way.

You have your horse because you want to have fun. It's supposed to bring you happiness. In many cases, you've given up a lot to have him and you want it to balance out; sacrifice and joy. You want to make memories.

I believe every horse, and every horse situation can bring that joy, those memories.
Do you have goals for your horse? or your horsemanship? or your partnership with your horse?

The new year is a good time to start.

It's also a good time to step out of the same old thought patterns we can sometimes get stuck in and set some new intentions, adopt a new perspective.

As long as you still have your horse there are oodles and oodles of goals you can set together-no matter what the current challenges are.

You have to look at the possibilities.

Having something to focus on (other than the problems) can be a good distraction.

A goal can distract you and start you thinking about something positive (raising your vibration and the message your energy says to your horse).

It's exciting and uplifting and encouraging when you make a step toward the goal (celebrate the small steps along the way to the end point).

Start thinking about what's possible.

Day dream about it in your car.

Make it the last thing you think of when you're lying in your bed at night.

Take responsibility for what you think (aka create). There's no room for victimhood with your horse.

Focus on what's possible.

Do you have any horse goals this year? If not, will you make one now?

Just one.

If you're like I was, you've been struggling to find a way to help your horse.

Maybe he's anxious.
Maybe he's lame.
Maybe he's got some intermittent, unspecific thing that you notice, but you can't quite put your finger on it. Maybe you're tired of trying all the things that don't work.

I know I was.

Oh man it was a bad day. Just one of those days when you got up on the wrong side of the bed-before you even got up.
We all have them occasionally.

I remember this one particular day I felt like that. Like..ugh! what else could go wrong today? (forgot a meeting, spilled my tea, felt ugly and quarreled with my hubby for no reason..before 7am)

I went out to feed the horses (same routine every day) and my one horse briskly walked up, ears perked forward, a spring in his step. When he got to me he just stood and extended his nose in a good-morning kind've way (same routine every day).
But this morning as he reached me and reached out his head he stopped. Turned. And walked away.
What? Are you freakin kidding me? I thought! What ELSE today?!
I fed and went back inside in an even worse mood.

Stewed about it all morning long.

It was lunchtime before I realized that I was the problem! Yep. I was the entire problem.

From getting up on the wrong side of the bed to having my horse turn and walk away-it was all me.

Since that day (I don't know why that particular day but it hit me like a ton of bricks. How I was feeling, what energy I was putting out. How I was thinking it was not me, but then I realized it was ALL me), I've studied, learned and mostly practiced consciously tweaking, shifting and even completely changing my energy.
So much so that now I can pretty much do it on a dime.
I mean there are times it's harder than others, but it is 100% doable every time.
And it's changed my life.

It changed my life.

Consciously choosing to change the energy you put out isn't easy. Maybe that's why a lot of folks don't do it? I don't know. There's a lot of inside work that has to happen.
So how do you do that?
You start by looking at your life. Has it given you what you wanted from it? Are you happy, satisfied, fulfilled, comfortable in your skin, calm, grounded, feeling love? Look at what you are getting and you will see what you are giving because you ALWAYS get back what you are putting out.
Perhaps you've heard the expression that our horses are a reflection of who we are?
True that.
The first step is to notice-without judgement-what you're getting. That's the first step. What are you living? Ask yourself. Ask it now.
