“Every pediatric cancer is technically rare, but the impact is enormous. When a child’s life is cut short, society loses decades of potential,” says Hollings researcher Dr. Casey Langdon.

With help from a grant from the St. Baldrick's Foundation, he’s working on safer, more effective combination therapies for Ewing sarcoma, a type of childhood bone cancer.

"Most of us will get HPV at some point," says Dr. Ashish Deshmukh.

And while most of us will be fine, not all of us will. Some will develop one of the six types of cancers caused by HPV.

Dr. Deshmukh and colleagues at Hollings have been studying both the good news and the not-as-good news about trends in HPV vaccination rates, attitudes toward HPV vaccination and access to vaccination.

Today, 62 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Cancer Centers – including MUSC Hollings Cancer Center – national organizations, and the University of Puerto Rico Comprehensive Cancer Center released a statement reinforcing the importance of HPV vaccination and urging health systems, providers, parents, caregivers and the public to take action to increase HPV vaccination coverage.

HPV vaccination is safe and protects against six types of cancer – including oropharyngeal, cervical and a**l cancers.

Recent data show no gains in HPV vaccination coverage, falling short of national goals.

We must act now to protect today’s children from future HPV-related cancers.

What you can do:

Parents – ask your child’s doctor about HPV vaccination starting at age 9.

Providers – recommend HPV vaccination at every visit.

Communities – spread the word: HPV vaccination is cancer prevention.

Join us in sharing the facts about HPV vaccination and increasing the number of children protected today against HPV cancers tomorrow.
