Texas Master Beekeeper Program

Texas Master Beekeeper Program The Texas Master Beekeeper Program (TMBP) is an educational program designed to increase the knowledge and skill level of participating beekeepers.

The program is a five-year (minimum) beekeeper training and certification program provided by the Texas Apiary Inspection Service in association with the Texas Beekeepers Association.

12/05/2025

The White Oak FFA Ag Issues team will present their leadership development event project, which involves debating both sides of a current agricultural issue. This year’s topic explores the potential negative effects of honey bees and will argue the pros and cons of beekeeping and students will thoughtfully consider how adding another honey bee hive to the White Oak High School Apiary will affect native pollinators. Their presentation is part of a competition format and does not necessarily reflect their personal opinions.

11/22/2025

Dodie Stillman will share effective ways beekeepers can advocate for honey bees at the local and state levels. She’ll discuss engaging with policymakers, participating in community outreach, supporting pollinator-friendly initiatives, and building partnerships that strengthen awareness and protection of bees across Texas.

11/22/2025

Dodie Stillman will present her work on identifying and mapping drone congregation areas (DCAs) across Texas. She’ll discuss how DCAs are located, why they matter for queen mating success, and what her findings reveal about regional mating patterns.

11/20/2025

Nathalie B. will discuss practical Integrated Pest Management strategies that help beekeepers control pests—especially Varroa—using a combination of monitoring, cultural practices, genetics, and targeted treatments. She’ll cover how to build an IPM plan, when to intervene, and how to reduce chemical reliance while maintaining healthy colonies.

11/20/2025

Nathalie B. will share her research exploring whether feeding bananas can stimulate colony growth and brood production. She’ll discuss the science behind banana volatiles, how colonies responded in field trials, and what this means for practical beekeeping.

11/20/2025

Dan Brantner will cover practical, Texas-focused strategies for managing queens throughout the year. Topics include evaluating queen performance, recognizing signs of queen failure, timing replacements, and adapting management to Texas.

11/20/2025

Dan Brantner will present findings from his research on two-queen colony systems, exploring how this approach can boost colony strength, honey production, and overall performance. He’ll discuss setup methods, management considerations, and research data comparing two-queen systems to traditional single-queen colonies.

Shannon LaGrave introduces the fundamentals of honey judging, including how honey is evaluated for clarity, moisture, flavor, aroma, container presentation, and defects. This talk provides an inside look at what judges look for, how entries are scored, and tips for producing award-winning honey.

11/20/2025

This talk explores how drone brood can serve as an effective indicator of Varroa pressure within a colony. Shannon LaGrave will discuss why drones are preferentially targeted by Varroa, how monitoring drone cells can reveal hidden mite levels, and practical ways beekeepers can use drone brood assessments to improve management decisions.
