As we reflect on the year gone by, The Community Hospice is proud of our mission to provide compassionate care, guidance, and support with dignity and respect to individuals who are seriously ill or at the end of life. This year, we hosted a variety of therapy programs to help individuals and families cope with loss -- from embroidery workshops to art journaling to ornament-making. We also hosted Camp Erin, bringing together nearly 40 children and teens who have lost a parent, a grandparent, a sibling, or another significant person. The camp provided a safe, nurturing environment where participants could enjoy fun camp games while learning essential skills to cope with their grief. It allowed kids to meet and connect with others their age who also experienced loss, so they know they are not alone.

We are grateful for so many individuals, groups, and families without whom we could not continue our extraordinary work. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Irma Waldo, age 100, a true pioneer who co-founded the first hospice program in New York State. We are also thankful for our hundreds of volunteers who give of their time week after week to support our patients and their families -- from new volunteers to those who have given their time for more than two decades; from college students to retirees; couples to sisters, and even a mother and son duo who volunteer! From those who delivered flowers to brighten a patient's day, to those who visited a centenarian on her 100th birthday, and those who simply sat quietly with a dying patient. Their contributions mean the world.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our families and communities -- from the young elementary schoot students who decorated flower pots, to school districts that collected needed items like socks and pjs; from those who donated yarn, to those who knitted/crocheted red/white/blue blankets for our veterans, to those who made little felt hearts to comfort children in our pediatric programs. Furthermore, we greatly appreciate everyone who supported Hospice through our fundraisers -- from our "Glimmer of Light," to "Swinging on a Star," to "Touched By An Angel," and "Walk for Hospice," which drew more than 1,000 people despite gray skies and early rain. We also thank groups that organized fundraisers to benefit Hospice -- your generosity means so much!

To our amazing, compassionate, and dedicated team -- including doctors, nurses, aides, social workers, therapists, counselors, chaplains, and frontline workers to behind-the-scenes office staff. Thank you for all you do to make a meaningful impact!

Lastly, we must express our profound gratitude to our Community Hospice Foundation Board of Directors. These volunteers contribute their time, energy, and leadership to help guide our mission and adapt to the ever-changing needs of our patients. We simply could not accomplish all that we do without their support! They are truly our Hospice Heroes!

On behalf of everyone at The Community Hospice, we wish you and yours a warm, wonderful holiday season, with health and blessings in the New Year! ❤

It's the surest sign of the season. Every year, every holiday season, Andrea Ferraro (back right) visits The Community Hospice's Inpatient Unit at St. Peter's to donate bags upon bags of new pajamas in honor of her mom who passed there. This year, the initiative, called "Mary's Jammies," delivered 26 jumbo shopping bags full of warm, comfy jammies. Andrea's goal is to enhance patient comfort by replacing cold hospital gowns with pajamas. Among the pjs collected this year were contributions from the Rotterdam Elks, Evergreen Commons Rehab & Nursing Center, and friends and supporters who Andrea calls "the village." After an extraordinary 36-year career in nonprofit fundraising—24 of which were dedicated to The Community Hospice — we are both proud and sad to announce the retirement of our Hospice Foundation Executive Director Steve Manny. A Troy native, Steve began his career in the nonprofit sector with the Muscular Dystrophy Association -- where he famously shook hands with telethon legend Jerry Lewis once. His path then led him to the Leukemia Society and the American Diabetes Association before his roots called him home to the Capital Region where he joined Hospice.

Steve jokes that his first fundraising venture involved asking his father for $5 – an effort he admits was rarely successful, but the experience likely ignited his lifelong passion for helping others. That drive fueled his decades of tireless service at Hospice, where he raised funds to support a range of free compassionate services to patients and families. “It’s been a glorious 24 years,” says Steve. “I’ll miss the
people and the work, but especially the friendship and support shared by board members, colleagues, and volunteers who have made this journey so meaningful.” Steve’s next adventure is in the works as he embraces his new role as a grandfather to his precious new granddaughter, Loella Joyce, diapers and all!

“Steve’s unwavering enthusiasm and deep belief in our Hospice mission have been truly inspiring,” says Michelle Mazzacco, executive vice president of the Continuing Care Division, St. Peter’s Health Partners. “His pride in our services and tireless
dedication to fundraising have helped ensure that patients and families receive the full spectrum of support they need—from our Wish Fund and bereavement services to educational programs, massage and music therapies, and more. We are incredibly fortunate to have worked alongside someone who has embodied a ‘whatever it takes’ spirit all these years,” adds Michelle. “Whether he’s installing an air conditioner in a trailer or orchestrating a once-in-a-lifetime VIP experience at Fenway or Disney, Steve brings the same level of care, creativity, and commitment to everything he does. His passion, storytelling talent, and sense of humor have built lasting relationships with donors across the region, helping to grow and sustain our mission in powerful ways. We are deeply grateful for all Steve has done and wish him the very best in this exciting new chapter!” Congratulations, Steve! We will miss you! ❤

Our hearts are warm on this rainy day thanks to the kindness of the Celtic Rays of Hope, Inc. The group raised $12K this year at their 18th Annual Celtic Rays of Hope Benefit this week and shared the funds with area charities, including a $3,500 grant to The Community Hospice. Our sincere gratitude for the funds which will support patient programs. Pictured: Hospice Foundation Executive Director Francesca Casaregola (center) accepts the check from Patty Nolan (l) and Carole Hackett from the Celtic Rays.

The Celtic Rays honors the memory of Elizabeth Harkes and Devin Nolan who both tragically passed in 2008. This past year marked the 18th anniversary. Every year, the organization picks multiple charities to support with proceeds raised at their annual benefit. The group has generously donated to Hospice since 2020.

The Community Hospice extends its heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful families and community members who support the needs of our patients, especially during the cold winter months. We would like to thank Marybeth and James Wiltese, and their son James who dropped off their generous donation of two large containers filled with warm, comfortable blankets for patients at our Hospice Inpatient Unit at St. Peter's. The Wilteses are donating these cozy blankets in memory of Dan Wiltse, who passed away in 2020, and Joanne McHugh Russell, who passed away in 2018. On behalf of our patients and their families, we sincerely thank the Wiltese family for their kindness and generosity!

"Those we love don't go away. They walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near." The Community Hospice understands the pain of going through the holidays after losing a loved one. To support those who are grieving, our Saratoga Office hosted an ornament-making workshop to help spouses, parents, and children honor and remember their loved ones.

Attendees brought in clothing, patches, and other personal items belonging to their loved ones and with the help of our counselors, created three different types of cherished ornaments as keepsakes. Some ornaments featured inspiring quotes, including one by Rumi: “Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with their heart and soul there is no such thing as separation.” The event was both heartfelt and therapeutic as participants showcased their crafts and shared stories with one another. Thank you to everyone who attended!

The Community Hospice is deeply touched when family members of our patients return to visit us, like Barbara Lemay Desrosiers who stopped by our Hospice Inpatient Unit at St. Peter's to donate blankets in memory of her mother who passed away with us over the summer. Thank you so much, Barbara, for thinking of us during this difficult time. We are truly sorry for your loss. Please take care of yourself, and remember that Hospice offers free grief counseling. Should you need it, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Did you know that The Community Hospice relies upon the kindness and generosity of donors throughout the year to provide extra comfort services to patients at no cost? Because of the caring people at Mohawk Honda, we're able to offer more of these special services in the 8 upstate New York counties we serve -- extra services such as massage and music therapies, and grief counseling for those who have lost a loved one. A heartfelt THANK YOU to the Mohawk Honda team for selecting Hospice as one of its $5,000 grant recipients for its "12 Days of Giving" campaign. Your love and support will touch more lives more than you will ever know! ❤

The Community Hospice invites you to take a moment to take in our beautiful tree decorated with precious ornament tags, each bearing the name of a loved one lost or honored. More than 100 people turned out for our special Light-A-Life Memorial Treelighting Ceremony this weekend. The event featured a reading of the names of those who are being remembered or celebrated. Thank you to all those who turned out to support our Tree of Life!

Calling all crafters, HAVE HEART! The Community Hospice is in need of these "Feelie Hearts" to share with children and teens in our pediatric bereavement programs. These fun, colorful pieces bring comfort to the hearts of our young clients who have suffered the loss of someone significant in their lives, such as a parent, grandparent, sibling, or friend. If you or someone you know can sew, please help us make these children smile. (No specific size, style, or material required, but hearts about the size of your palm or smaller are most popular.) Donations can be dropped off at any of our offices. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! ❤

A heartfelt THANK YOU to the Pioneer - NY Charitable Foundation for selecting The Community Hospice as one of its five $5,000 Capital Region nonprofit grant recipients for Giving Tuesday! The “Pioneers with Purpose” grants were supported by employee donations throughout the year. Agencies were nominated by Pioneer employees and chosen by a volunteer employee committee. Pictured (l to r): Community Hospice Foundation Executive Director Francesca Casaregola, Hospice Events Supervisor Jodi Radley, and Pioneer Senior Branch Manager-Business Development Officer Alisa Cianfarani, who is also a volunteer Hospice Foundation Board Member.

The Community Hospice Foundation was chosen for the end-of-life care and grief support we provide to children and teens through our annual Camp Erin weekend bereavement camp held in the Adirondacks. The camp offers youth ages 7-17 a safe environment where they can enjoy fun camp activities while learning essential skills to cope with the loss of a significant person in their lives, such as a parent, grandparent, sibling or friend. Facilitated by Hospice grief counselors, Camp Erin also helps connect young people to others their age who are also experiencing loss so they know that they are not alone.

The tree stands beautiful here at Hospice right now but this Saturday night, we will transform it to a beautiful memorial of love. Please join The Community Hospice for our annual Light-A-Life Memorial Tree Lighting Ceremony this Saturday, 12/6 at 4 pm, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer. The healthfelt event will feature a reading of the names and tree lighting for community members to memorialize a loved one during the holiday season. With your gift of $25, two holiday memorial tags will be made bearing your loved one's name -- one will be hung on our Light-A-Life tree with your loved one's name read during the memorial ceremony; a second memorial tag will be mailed to you to hang in your own home, possibly on your own tree. We will also have beautiful cardinal ornaments for purchase for $30, including shipping. (Folklore has it that a cardinal's appearance is meant to show us that we are not alone. Seeing a cardinal is a sign that your loved ones or angels are near.) Proceeds will benefit Hospice programs and services. The ceremony may be viewed online upon the conclusion of the event at www.lightalifehospice.org. For more information on memorial tags or ornament orders, please visit our website or call Jodi at 518-525-1070.
