✨Resident Spotlight: Bernice ✨ Bernice was born in Illinois in 1931 as the oldest of five children. In 1936, her family moved to Sonora, KY, where her father worked in his brother’s business and as a tenant farmer. In 1945, they purchased their own farm in Upton, KY, where the family worked together to run the farm.

After graduating from Magnolia High School in 1949, Bernice moved to Louisville to help a relative care for their newborn baby. While living at the YWCA in downtown Louisville, a friend invited her on a double date. It was on that blind date that she met Al Boone. Bernice and Al married in 1951 and made their home in Louisville, where they raised five children in a loving Catholic household. In 1974, after their youngest child started kindergarten, Bernice returned to the workforce and began a career in banking operations. Bernice and Al shared 31 years of marriage before his sudden passing in 1982.

Following her retirement in 1990, Bernice and her second husband, John Humble, moved to Cecilia, KY. They enjoyed their retirement years together, staying active in their church and community and participating in a bowling league. They were married for 23 years.

After John’s passing, Bernice reconnected with classmate John Catlett at a high school reunion. They were married in 2009 and shared 16 happy years together. In 2024, they moved back to Louisville, where they lived until his passing in the fall of 2025.

Throughout her life, Bernice has enjoyed crocheting, bowling, and playing cards and bunco with friends. In addition to being the proud mother of five children, she has eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Bernice often says that her greatest pride in life is her family.

Last month, Bernice celebrated her 95th birthday!

🎨 The Altenheim has been honored to serve a number of residents who are artists over the years. From paintings by WD to beautiful scenes of our grounds by Annette (how we miss both of these wonderful residents!) to the collaborative textile art project that hangs in our stairwell, it is a joy to see our residents’ many talents.
