So proud to know this human and to have her play such important roles in our organization. Akhmiri currently serves on our board and has been training doulas for us for at least five years. One day we will count the number of doulas which equates to countless lives changed under her guidance and wisdom.
We are proud to shine a light on Akhmiri Sekhr-Ra, a beloved sister, Culture Bearer, and lifelong advocate for birthing people and families. With over three decades of experience in perinatal health, Akhmiri has served her community with deep spiritual grounding, cultural wisdom, and fierce dedication. Based in Minneapolis, she currently serves as Chief Family Development Officer and Health Systems Navigator at the Cultural Wellness Center, where she supports families throughout their birthing journeys and mentors the next generation of birth workers.
Akhmiri has trained countless doulas, lactation counselors, and childbirth educators across the country. She brings cultural humility and ancestral knowledge into every space she enters. As a 2024 McKnight Culture Bearer Fellow, she continues to hold space for healing, tradition, and transformation in maternal health. Her work reminds us that birth is not only a physical process, it is a sacred act of creation. We honor Akhmiri for the powerful legacy she is living and for the path she continues to create for all of us.
