A follow-up on our previous post showing how many younger people in the UK use TV captions. Wonder if it is the same in the US.

Youngsters almost four times more likely than older viewers to watch subtitled TV, research suggests.

Madhav Lavakare gave a very interesting presentation today on AirCaps a wearable captioning device for people with hearing loss. Those attending had a chance to wear the device and everyone was impressed by the speed and accuracy of the transcription. If you would like to be included on our mailing list for future events please contact Geoff Plant at hearf@aol.com.

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for our Open House on Sunday. We had a wonderful time using our new Mark Ross room, catching up with friends, and infusing music into our afternoon together.

Erica, one of my clients, is an architect and arranged for a donation of acoustic panels for the Mark Ross Room. As if that wasn’t enough, her husband Henry installed them today, just in time for our Open Day on Sunday. Thanks to Erica and Henry for their great contribution to the HRF.

HRF Board Member Peggy Ellertsen alerted me to this TED talk over a week ago and I finally found the time to watch it today. Anyone who doubts the value of persisting with listening training needs to listen to this talk. It is inspiring and extremely interesting. The HRF now has a room for group activities. It‘s called the Mark Ross room in memory of one of our founding Board members. Mark passed away a couple of years ago, but he will always be remembered for his groundbreaking work for children and adults with hearing loss. I first met Mark at a conference in New Zealand in 1977 and regarded him as one of the best in the field. Richard Seewald gave me permission to use a picture of Mark that he took a few years ago. It captures Mark perfectly with his wry smile and twinkling eyes. I’ve added a short description of Mark and his life and achievements.

This article was published in the Guardian last month and is well worth reading. The HRF isn’t thinking of starting a choir, but we are hoping to have more opportunities for people with hearing loss to sing together. Music is already an important part of our training approach and we aim to do even more in this area. WATCH THIS SPACE FOR FURTHER DETAILS!
