This week, our executive director, Judy Raymond, hosted a Snack & Chat session with residents. During the relaxed gathering, Judy accepted questions from folks regarding just about anything other than specific work orders or matters better addressed in private conversations. It was a great opportunity for people to learn more about Judy and each other and to help build community rapport. The sessions will be held monthly, featuring other staff members and topics of general interest!

Our gorgeous new art studio is getting tons of traffic lately! This week, we were delighted to welcome artist David Duck to our Sip & Paint event. He's on the Board of Tidewater Arts Outreach and led our staff and residents in creating their own canvases with a beach theme. It was a lot of fun to flex our creative muscles and just share time together!

Look what we've added to campus for our Healthcare residents and families! This WhisperGLIDE swing allows people to sit across from each other while they talk and move in tandem. It's a great way to spend time together and socialize. Brandi Spivey, administrator of Lake Prince At Home - Home health and home care services in Suffolk, VA, helped fund the swing as part of her LeadingAge Virginia Leadership Academy service learning project. The EveryAge Foundation also helped raise money from residents and employees. Brandi says, "I used to watch residents take their families outside and sit beside them in wheelchairs, but now I get to see them swing and interact with each other close-up!"

National Therapeutic Recreation Week wraps up today! The observance is intended to raise awareness of therapeutic recreation programs and services that could improve the health and well-being of individuals with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. In practice, recreational therapists treat and help maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of their clients by seeking to reduce depression, stress, and anxiety; recover basic motor functioning and reasoning abilities; build confidence; and socialize effectively. Many thanks to our EveryAge recreation therapists, who carry out these tasks with dedication and excellence!

Yesterday, we rustled up a slew of residents for an interactive meal and murder exposé at the Dead Man’s Saloon (aka LPW Resident Services)! Town sheriff Tracey Doxie (aka our resident services coordinator) first calmed the suspects with fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, a buttery roll, and cheesecake before describing the crime scene in detail. Then, each suspect was encouraged to share their version of events and plead their innocence. The surly bunch included Shott O’Wiskey, One-Eyed Pete, Buffalo Bob, Patty Petticoat, Shuffle N. Cut, Yella Rose, Nuggett Mcrush, Buck N. Bronco, Calamity Jill, Dewdrop Pinn, and Maverick Bullock. While the crime was ultimately pinned on One-Eyed Pete, Yella Rose gave a knowing wink to spectators, raising fresh suspicions. Stay tuned for a follow-up as the story continues!

The Fourth of July was packed with opportunities to socialize, celebrate, and eat well! We noshed on classics like grilled hot dogs, potato salad, and watermelon and enjoyed live music from Sounds of Time. We also marveled at the spectacle of our annual golf cart parade, where folks decorate their open-air vehicles with every variation of red, white, and blue you can imagine! It was a fitting tribute to America's birthday and a great chance to get together with the entire Lake Prince Woods community!

From June 16-22, our residents honored local crews during Firefighter Appreciation Week! Each day, they donated and delivered food items to support these civil servants, covering breakfast, lunch, and dinner over the course of the week. Local Station #6 of the City of Suffolk Department of Fire & Rescue was the special focus of their efforts. Our residents are grateful for the support of these brave men and women who help keep them safe year-round!

Each year, June 19, or Juneteenth, recalls the date in 1865 when all enslaved African-Americans in the US were made aware of the Emancipation Proclamation and were officially released from their bonds – some two years after President Abraham Lincoln had initially signed the proclamation. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 when President Biden signed it into law. Celebrations include picnics, rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, family reunions, park parties, historical reenactments, and blues festivals. Happy Juneteenth, everyone!

Here's to every hero dad who lifts up his kids and his community with commitment and presence. We honor all the fathers who live in, work at, attend, or visit any of our EveryAge communities or locations. And we offer a special 'thank you' to anyone who has served as a father figure to the people in their lives. Your willingness to praise, uplift, teach, admonish, guide, and discipline in a way that builds up youngsters is invaluable and makes all the difference.

CNA Week is celebrated this year from June 13-19, and the theme is “We’ll Be There For You!” Many thanks to our frontline staff and their commitment to our residents and participants. These compassionate men and women provide exceptional care at skilled nursing centers, assisted living communities, PACE programs, and home health agencies. We celebrate and recognize the incredible work that nearly 1 million CNAs throughout the country do everyday for seniors and people with disabilities – and we especially pay tribute to our EveryAge team members!

Although the weather didn't cooperate on Memorial Day, it didn't prevent us from having an indoor picnic! Amid a sea of red, white, and blue decorations and clothing, we enjoyed barbecue, beer, brats, and berries! We were also treated to classic American barbershop quartet music with a whole host of talented singers! It was a good day of community, and we also took time to remember the freedom and opportunities we have as Americans, thanks to the military men and women who gave up their own lives so we could be enjoying a satisfying Memorial Day so fully.

We were delighted to receive a certificate of gratitude from the Virginia Federation of NARFE National Headquarters (the National Active and Retired Federal Employees), who recognized our support to conferences hosted by the Virginia Funders Network. The VFN is a statewide membership association composed of nearly 120 philanthropic organizations that work to improve the quality of life in the Commonwealth. We love involving the community in the greater life of LPW and helping forge partnerships that increase opportunities for folks throughout Virginia! May is Asian-American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The month honors the many contributions and achievements of the AAPI community. According to the 2020 census, 24 million people in the US fall under the umbrella of AAPI, and the Pew Research Center has found that Asian-Americans are the fastest-growing ethnic group in America. May also commemorates the immigration of the first Japanese people to the US, as well as Golden Spike Day (May 10, 1869), which marked the completion of the transcontinental railroad, largely built by Chinese laborers. Our EveryAge locations have been honoring the AAPI community this month, including with culinary tributes like making Asian dumplings with residents and participants and serving Korean lettuce wraps and tandoori chicken in our dining rooms.

Each May, Older Americans Month is observed through presidential proclamation. During those four weeks, the nation recognizes the contributions of older Americans while noting aging trends and reaffirming commitments to serve the older adults in our communities. The theme for 2024 is 'Powered by Connection,' which recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being. Here's to all those folks we serve through our work and dedication as EveryAge employees!

National Skilled Nursing Care Week wraps up today. Traditionally, the observance begins on Mother's Day and shines a light on the people who live, work, and volunteer in nursing centers. This year's theme is 'Radiant Memories – A Tribute to the Golden Age of Radio,' and it recalls a bygone, beloved era when families gathered together to hear news and entertainment. Many thanks to all those who support skilled nursing care at our EveryAge locations and to those who entrust your loved ones to our care.

It's always a joy for our residents to receive homemade cards from local school children, and our folks were delighted to be remembered for Mother's Day. Thank you so much to the Suffolk Virginia Sheriff's Office and the students at Elephant's Fork Elementary School. Your kindness is appreciated more than you could know!

Last week, the Suffolk Sheriff’s Department celebrated nursing home moms ahead of the Mother’s Day weekend, with a bit of help from Elephant’s Fork Elementary School students. After picking up cards from the students on Wednesday, May 8, the Sheriff’s Office stopped by Maryview Nursing Cente...

runs from May 6-12, and it offers a time to celebrate all the nurses who work throughout our EveryAge family of senior living communities. The theme for 2024 is 'Nurses Make the Difference,' and we honor that sentiment by recognizing the varying roles that nurses play and their positive impact on the lives of our residents and participants. It's true that nurses make a difference as trusted advocates who ensure that individuals, families, and communities receive quality patient care and services. To our EveryAge nurses, we congratulate you on your compassion, your dedication, your fortitude, and your commitment to senior care! It makes a difference!

April, which is Occupational Therapy Month, honors OTs, OT assistants, and students in practice, education, research, and science. Occupational therapy uses everyday life activities to promote health, well-being, and engagement in people of all ages. It includes things like bathing, dressing, taking care of family and self, working, volunteering, going to school, and more. This month, we've been celebrating the OT staff at all of our EveryAge locations and applauding their efforts in helping clients develop, recover, improve, and maintain skills needed for daily living and working.
