Renea Nilsson Psychotherapy Wherever you are in your process, I am here to support and guide you towards improved health and life satisfaction.

I am a clinically trained licensed clinical social worker specializing in individual, couple, and family therapy for people experiencing:

Parenting challenges
Marital/partnership challenges
Anxiety (including social anxiety, generalized anxiety, specific phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, and others)
Depression
Bi-Polar disorder
Body image challenges
Self esteem challenges
Family conflict issues
Transition challenges (life, faith, relationship, moving, etc.) Pre-marital counseling
Eating disorders (including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other eating issues)

At the core of my approach to psychotherapy is my belief that each and every one of us is, above all else, a person worthy of respect, empathy, and love. In addition to that fundamental truth, each of us possesses strengths and challenges that impact our functioning in relationships, our functioning in school, work, and the community, and our abilities to reach our goals. We develop our strengths and challenges through a complex interaction of things we cannot change (i.e. – genetics, time, experiences, personality) and things we can change (i.e. – thought patterns, behavioral patterns, brain chemistry). Many of our strengths and challenges are not set in stone and can be altered or optimized though making changes where we are able. Often times, problems arise when we lose sight of our ability to make changes or we find that making changes seems to be too difficult or too scary. No one can make difficult changes without help and support. I hope to be part of your journey by partnering with you to work towards making those difficult changes that will allow you to optimize your strengths and build tools that allow you to accept and work with your challenges rather than against them.

I think this is a great reflection on focusing on finding identity and self-worth through values; what's really important. I would like to add the thought that just as we should feel empowered to identify and define our own values, we can also define for ourselves what it means to feel "pretty". We don't have to be either "pretty" or "not pretty" because of how this concept is defined by others!

It's Eating Disorder Awareness Week so build your awareness and start a conversation! Eating disorders often hide in plain sight, so whether you have serious concerns or just an inkling about yourself or a loved one, take the screening. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental disorder but recovery is absolutely possible and early intervention greatly improves the chances of success. https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/

Eating disorders are surrounded by myths, stereotypes, and stigma, which can make talking about them feel like a challenge. One in 10 Americans will struggle with an eating disorder at some point in their lives. Yet despite their prevalence, those affected often experience deep feelings of isolation...

As Valentine's Day approaches, it is so important to reflect on the true and deeper experience of love beyond the overly romanticized versions we encounter in the media. As a wife and as a therapist, I greatly value this perspective on love and find it to be empowering and validating to the real experience. Give it a listen!!

What if the first question we asked on a date were, "How are you crazy? I'm crazy like this"? Philosopher and writer Alain de Botton's essay "Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person" was, amazingly, the most-read article in The New York Times in the news-drenched year of 2016. As people and as a culture...
