As with humans, back pain in horses can be difficult to pinpoint and difficult to maintain or cure. Signs and symptoms are numerous and may indicate a problem somewhere else.

How muscles compensate in horses with back pain; Horses with poor core strength, the work of the core is compensated by the longissimus dorsi. Longissimus dorsi is a movement muscle not a postural muscle. So when used in this manor, it is held in a more rigid posture, resulting in stiffness and poor performance.

Common causes of back pain
📍Injury, twisting, turning sharply, slipping, falling, or awkward movements.
📍Conformation; long backed horses are susceptible to muscle and ligament strains whereas short backed horses are prone to more vertebral problems.
📍Pain transmitted to the back from elsewhere.
📍Compensating due to an imbalanced rider.
📍Repetitive training.
📍Compensation for altered movement patterns.
📍Unbalanced feet or shoeing.
📍Poorly fitted saddles.
So much more…

Signs and symptoms
🛑Behavioral changes
🛑Temperament
🛑Resisting
🛑Rolling
🛑Constantly resting a leg or sifting the weight when standing still
🛑Cold backed
🛑Loss of mobility
🛑Appearing stiff or awkward posture
🛑Favoring a lead, or cross firing within a lope
🛑Muscle spasm
🛑Soreness on palpation

Once back pain has been identified it will almost certainly involve rest and controlled exercise. It may include anti-inflammatories, pain reliever, manipulation, massage, magnetic therapy, stretching, and reflex exercises.

Q: What do you love most about working on horses?

A: I love seeing the difference I can make within the massage, after the massage, and if I see the horse again. I LOVE looking at the owner and saying I don’t feel as though I need to come back! I like the way they feel. Get back to work!

Do you think your horse would benefit from a massage?
Not sure?
Ask yourself these questions.
Is it possible for your horse to sustain a muscle injury did their day-to-day life?
Is your horse in proper condition for what you ask your horse to do?
Do you require a lot of physical work from your horse?
Do you compete your horse?
When you work out or train do your muscles get sore?
What do you think professional athletes do when they have muscle pain?

Still not sure? Your horse can carry themselves in strange ways due to a multitude of reasons, that alone can lead to build up tension, sore muscles, and so on. Built up tension is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what it can do to the rest of the body.

What is the pain cycle?
1. Fear of pain.
2. Brian starts to focus on the pain.
3. The nervous system changes.
4. Less movement along with decreased compensation patterns.
5. More pain and more anxiety.

My job is to break the pain cycle.
ALL touch communicates with the brain!
1. improve pain.
2. Improve awareness.
3. Improve control.
4. Improve movement.
Never underestimate the power of touch!
