About Champions for Everyday Wins:
Champions for Everyday Wins is an initiative for projects that directly benefit hospital department staff.

We are intentionally focusing on projects that are much smaller than our recent campaigns–$5,000 or less for each. These Everyday Wins projects can have a large impact on quality of work and morale for our staff over time.

The Women’s Care and Birth Center recently received a new ice and water machine, thanks to our wonderful donors. Staff now has enough ice and filtered water to meet patient needs, without leaving their unit. This kicks off a new initiative for us—Champions for Everyday Wins.

Thank you to our community of donors for making this possible, after an overwhelmingly successful Healthcare Foundation auction in 2022. A surplus of donations from that event will fund the first set of Everyday Wins.

We are pleased to announce that we now have a convenient medication take-back program for easy disposal of leftover, unused and out-of-date prescription and over-the counter medications.

In an effort to help reduce the risk of drugs in the home that can potentially harm children, teens or adults, we have set up a secure, safe drop-off location in our main lobby at 1000 Hospital Drive, Building 1.

Unused medications in the home are a source of drug abuse in millions of homes, with the opioid crisis in the United States fueled in part by that availability: 47% (1) of misused prescription pain relievers are given by, bought from or taken from a friend or relative. On average, an American dies of a drug overdose every 5 minutes (2).

“We want to provide the folks in our community with the safe, secure opportunity to clean out their medicine cabinets and make their homes and communities safer,” said Ken Hoover, Director of Pharmacy. “This will be our community’s first dedicated site for safe medication disposal. We want to remind people that they should not flush drugs down the toilet. Traces of drugs can appear in community drinking water.”

Hoover added, “Our drug disposal unit, which is easily accessible in our main lobby information and admissions waiting area, is a great answer to that problem and it’s simple to do. All people do is just come in, look for the big blue bin and drop in their unwanted medications. Drugs can be dropped off with no questions asked.”

Director Hoover said there are some things that can’t be taken in the receptacle such as inhalers and needles, but pharmacy staff will be available to help answer any questions. The collection bin will be available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and closed for weekends and holidays.

We have worked with the McPherson County Community Foundation, Douglas County Citizen’s Committee on Alcoholism (DCCCA), and received funding through the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS), and the MedSafe & Sharps Compliance, Inc. programs to make this project a reality.

The Hess Fitness Center at McPherson Center for Health recently received new free weights and stationary weight equipment thanks to a gift from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

The new equipment replaces machines and free weights that had been in use for over 20 years at the facility.

Hess Fitness Center director Dani Crist said, “We are so appreciative of the donation we received for replacing our existing weightlifting equipment. There have been some really nice advancements in this type of equipment over the years. It is built with the goal of working muscles in a safe and ergonomically efficient manner. Our members love the new equipment and we invite anyone to come in and discuss our memberships.”

Crist added that the fitness center is available around the clock using an entrance badge.

Amy Bower, director of the McPherson Healthcare Foundation said, “The McPherson Healthcare Foundation was pleased to be able to partner with the donor and the fitness center in providing this new equipment that will promote the health and wellness of our community. We appreciate the continued support of our donors toward such worthwhile endeavors.”

We are excited to announce that beginning July 11, 2022, walk-in clinic services will be located at our Medical Office Building on the hospital campus at 1000 Hospital Drive, Building 3. As a result, urgent care services will no longer be offered at McPherson Urgent Care at 823 North Main. The last day of service at that location will be Friday, July 8.

“It’s all about what is best for patients,” said Chris Stipe, President and CEO. “Among other things, this change will give our walk-in patients quicker access to lab and radiology services to aid in their diagnosis.”

The Medical Office Building currently houses McPherson Medical & Surgical Associates physician clinics and is a state-of-the-art outpatient center that includes laboratory and x-ray services, as well as procedure rooms within the clinic. Additionally, providers who care for walk-in patients at the new location will be able to consult more readily with other clinic physicians.

“We have been planning this shift in the location of these services for some time,” stated Dr. Trenton VanEaton, Family Medicine Physician overseeing the clinical care delivered at the previous location. He added that moving the walk-in service to the hospital campus will allow for more optimal clinical care for patients that need to see a provider on short notice.

Another benefit to the move is that parking and patient drop off are safer and more convenient at the hospital. “Frankly, we just have more abundant and better resources on the hospital campus to support the care of patients than what we have on Main Street,” Stipe commented.

Clinic hours at the new location will be 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Walk-ins are welcome. To schedule an appointment with a McPherson Medical & Surgical Associates Physician or Provider, call 620-241-7400.

We are pleased to announce the addition of a new CT scanner to our arsenal of tools to assist providers and patients seeking answers to health issues. We have installed a brand new Siemens go.Top EXCEL CT scanner. It is a state-of-the-art machine that improves the patient experience by limiting the time needed to conduct the scan.

Director of Radiology Tammy Field-Kempton said, “A separate tablet allows technologists to conduct some patient registration on the fly while the patient is on the table. This improves the patient experience by reducing the time needed to perform most studies.” She added that with the new technology, the high-quality images are produced more quickly than before.

Our technologists have been spending time recently learning about the equipment and in intensive training to prepare for patient experiences.

The CT scanner is another example of our focus on enhancing radiology modalities. With the consolidation of many services into the Women’s Imaging and Diagnostics Center a couple of years ago, and the acquisition of a permanent MRI last year, we are confident in our ability to provide exceptional services to patients here locally without their need to travel to receive modern radiology services.

Christopher Stipe, President and Chief Executive Officer said, “This is the best CT technology available in our industry. Our patients deserve nothing less. They will benefit from the highest quality images possible and we will be able to offer new services with this technology.”

Field-Kempton said people would be surprised how many scans are performed in the facility. “We run an average of 300 to 340 CT exams each month. This includes inpatients and the emergency department, so the machine is in high demand,” she said. “An added benefit to the purchase of a Siemens CT scanner is that our MRI is also a Siemens product so we have some continuity for our technologists for the workflow and for patient care. We want the community to get the best imaging and patient care in our area.”

The machine is now in service and our technologists Tonya, Morgan, Tammy and Jordon are ready to assist patients in the utilization of this important diagnostic tool.

We are appreciative that Mac-Town Crossfit recently held a fundraiser among their members to support a local program near and dear to our hearts...Safe Kids!

Mac-Town Crossfit co-owner Sarah Muehler said they are a local fitness facility that comes alongside people to help them become the best versions of themselves regardless of any perceived limitations or abilities. “We do an annual competition at the gym during the 3 weeks that the International Crossfit also puts on a competition. We have recently tried to pick something local that we can incorporate into our gym community’s 3 week event as a local fundraiser. We decided we wanted to do something health related this year so I reached out to Amy Bower at the McPherson Healthcare Foundation and she told me about the Safe Kids program.”

Safe Kids is a network of partners and local coalitions across the Kansas dedicated to preventing childhood injury. Local Safe Kids Coordinator and Paramedic Justi Clemmons said, “Through this gracious donation by Mac-Town Crossfit, Safe Kids of McPherson County in conjunction with McPherson EMS will be able to provide safe sleep adjuncts to families. These funds will allow us to purchase cribettes that we can distribute to those families in need of safe bedding or sleeping areas for their infants. With this funding we also hope to begin to build a program where we can donate a Halo wearable swaddle blanket to every baby born at McPherson Hospital. Both adjuncts will help in assuring that our community’s infants are safe while practicing safe sleep habits. We appreciate Mac-Town Crossfit owners and members for this generous donation.”

Muehler said their members raised $1,215. All the money was actually donated by teams of gym members during their 3 week event. The team with the highest donations received extra points toward their competition. Thanks to Mac-Town Crossfit for making a difference in our community!

About MHF

The McPherson Healthcare Foundation, Inc. was formed and chartered in October of 1986 as a 501c(3) organization. Its purpose is to secure and expend financial aid for the operations, maintenance and expansion of the health facilities and services associated with McPherson Hospital, and to otherwise contribute to the development of improved health care in McPherson County.

Currently, on behalf of McPherson Hospital, the McPherson Healthcare Foundation is coordinating fundraising efforts to secure $5 million in gifts and pledges for Phase 1 of the Caring for the Future Campaign. The hospital kicked off the campaign in July 2014 and has raised $3 million from donor support, fundraising events like the annual golf tournament and fall auction as well as the participation of several charitable foundations.

McPherson Hospital is critical not only to maintaining the health and well-being of our citizens, but modern healthcare facilities provide essential infrastructure to secure business and industry.

The best course to ensure a prosperous future for the city of McPherson and McPherson County is to implement a multi-phase, multi-year facility plan that will:
