Occupational Therapy Tips After Back Surgery
Recovering from back surgery means protecting your spine at all costs:
No bending,
No lifting,
No twisting.
The infamous B.L.T spinal precautions.
Even simple daily tasks like getting dressed need a safe strategy. Here’s how Occupational Therapy (OT) helps you stay independent while healing:
👕 Upper Body Dressing:
• Sit in a stable chair or on the edge of the bed with back support.
• Slip the weaker or more limited arm into the sleeve first, then the stronger arm.
• Keep movements slow and avoid twisting your torso when pulling shirts overhead.
👖 Lower Body Dressing:
• Use a long-handled reacher to pull pants or underwear up over your legs.
• A sock aid helps you put on socks without bending forward.
• A long-handled shoehorn makes it easier to slide into shoes without straining.
🛠️ Helpful Tools to Stay Safe:
• Dressing stick
• Reacher/grabber
• Sock aid
• Long-handled shoehorn
💡 Pro Tip: Always dress the operated or weaker side first. This reduces strain and keeps you in control.
At Caruth Home Health, our OTs & COTAs teach these techniques hands-on, making sure you can return to daily life safely and confidently.
Independence after surgery isn’t just possible,
it’s essential.
